An 18 year old killed at least 5 people yesterday in a Utah mall. I think the parents should be held responsible. This would make parents finally spend time with their kids, I believe. How do these parents not know their kids are psychopathic?

You can spend time with your kids and love them to death and treat them like the most special person on the planet, but kids get screwed up along the way. How do you know this kids uncle didn't molest him for 8 years when he was a child? Could be a lot of outside sources to destroy a child other than his parents not being there for him.

All very plausible scenarios, but still, we all know that more than 50% of the parents today, are AWOL where their kids are concerned......just ask your kids' teachers. And as Sammy Davis used to sing, "Don't do the crime if you can't do the time!"......meaning.....don't have kids if you are not willing to be responsible for them.

I agree to an extent here that this kid probably was not very loved at home...hence this might have started him down this path ..Parents are a bit at fault here ....

"don't do the crime if you can't do the time"?? What are you smoking?

You can have 4 kids, raise them the same, 3 can become priests, the 4th can become a mass murderer beacuse of some mental imbalance.

Granted, there are situations where parents are the direct cause of a kids psychosis and deserve some of the blame.

All of the whacked out people that I know come from dysfunctional families where nobody gave a damn about anything. Unfortunately, I don't think there's anything any of us can do about this except maybe sterilyzing the proven whack jobs.

By the time you are in the high school you have to make your own choices as far as what influences you. You should know right from wrong by then.

Any kid who is 18 years old who kills five people knows what he is doing.

We all have to make the best decisions for us. I have a great family, they certianly helped me be a good person growing up and being 21, but I still had to choose and make my own decisions.

I used to work at a daycare and you can clearly tell the children growing up in a loving environment vs non. The kids act totally different from one and another. The kids coming from the 'good' environment are able to understand things much better - more importantly, I rarely had to repeat myself with these kids. They knew what they can do and what they can not do. They didnt push any buttons or talked back.

The other kids....WOW.

I have had this discussion before. There is no way in hell can a parent be with a kid 24 hours a day. My parents were very good to me and when I was in high school I got involved in the wrong crowd. My parents tried everything they could to get me away from this crowd and it took me getting arrested to realize what an idiot I was. It was something small i got arrested for.

If the parent is trying to guide thier children the best they can, the kid should stand up and say it was my decision.

I agree..... parents can only do so much. Some kids are just destined to be trouble makers no matter what. I mean just look at Andy Reid's kids.....

This is exactly what I am saying. AWOL or bad parents are responsible for the majority of bad kids, not all, but most.

That is because Reid was working 16-18 hours day like all other coaches. Parents are the primary reason that most kids do turn out bad. However, you can not make blanket statement like that.

What the hell is wrong with everybody in society? I mean I understand about Pinny going doing and being depressed, but why not take out a Senator or Congressional Rep.
