Cubs more worried about TED LILLY than their 'ACE'

Whatever happens, I don't want to know [anything] about a contract during the season. I want to sign with the Cubs before the season starts," the Cubs' pitching ace said in an interview on WGN-TV, according to the Chicago Tribune. "If they don't sign me, sorry, but I must go. That's what Carlos Zambrano thinks."
He also thinks he should get paid -- a lot. Zambrano and the Cubs are currently due to go to salary arbitration Feb. 20, with Zambrano seeking $15.5 million and the Cubs offering $11.025 million.

The Cubs spent lavishly during the offseason, forking over nearly $300 million to bring aboard Alfonso Soriano and Ted Lilly and re-sign Aramis Ramirez in an effort to turn around last year's NL-worst 66-96 record.

During the annual Cubs Convention, Zambrano, when asked whether he will test free agency next season, repeatedly said "This is a business" and noted that Barry Zito's seven-year, $126 million deal helped raise his value on the free-agent market.
"When you're a great pitcher and have talent, you deserve the money no matter who gives it to you," he said, according to the Tribune. "Zito is a great pitcher. Good for him he has that contract, and I think that will help me.

"[Cubs general manager] Jim [Hendry] spent a lot of money. I hope he has more for 'Big Z,'" he said, the newspaper reported. Zambrano, who became the Cubs' staff ace when Kerry Wood and Mark Prior went down with injuries, went 16-7 with a 3.41 ERA in 2006. For his career he's 64- 42 with a 3.29 ERA in 977 innings.

This is going to be interesting.....he'll want 120+....if they sign him up, the Cubs will have spent over 425 million bucks in one offseason...and they'll probably still suck ass!! :ohno:

I find it odd how people report what a team spent in terms of future contracts. So if they had signed Soriano for 4/100 that would have been 36 million less than 8/136? When you're talking big multi-year deals that total amounts spent don't really tell you anything. What really matter is the annual liabilities.

And Zambrano will be a better pitcher than Zito the next 7 years, he does deserve the money. I say 6/100.

Funny thing is... I was listening to talk radio and a guy in the cubs front office was on yesterday...

they asked him about the rotation he said we have 4 spots set and Sean Marshall and Mark Prior are fighting it out for the 5th spot...

Wait are you serious.... If Mark Prior is healthy he has to fight for his job? The guy then went on to say he will be the 5th starter this season if healthy... So they are starting Jason Marquis and Ted Lilly ahead of Mark Prior. Mark Prior may be a ***** but he is on another level compared to those two idiots...

This i s why the CUbs will never win a title with these idiots in office.... also why I love that I am a White Sox fan

No, the idiotic thing to do would be to count on Prior to be at the top of our rotation. Obviously if Prior stays healthy and is the "Prior of old," he will end up atop the rotation with Z. Cubs are sick of basing their strategy on if he stays healthy, thank God.

Does it really matter what number you assign? They just don't want to get hopes up too high not really knowing if Prior will be healthy and remain healthy. Obviously if he is the Prior of old then he has a spot. But I also don't agree with the rest of that as they have apparently forgotten about Wade Miller. As far as I know he is healthy and can definitely compete for a spot in the rotation.

The way I see it, Marshall is basically the 7th option. I doubt he will make the rotation.
