What a career! Is he still one of the best in the game? I know about 5 years ago he was considered the best in the world.

SAKIC is currently in the TOP 12 in pts and TOP 25 in goals scored in the league.

TTinCO would be better to answer your question than me as I'm sure he has seen SAKIC play more than me this year.

Still top TEN in the world???..........probably pushing it to say that considering the amount of good young talent in the league right now and others in their prime.........however, sure many observers would still rate him in the TOP TEN considering his all-around play and many intangibles he brings to the AVs.

It seems as though he never garnered the attention he should have. But given his quiet, calm, and cool demeanor it comes as no surprise. Perhaps the deadliest wrist shot in the last 20 years. Yes, I am biased. Growing up a Nordiques fan, as soon as Sakic was drafted out of Swift Current I was on board. I just wish I could have talked my folks into getting me the #88 Sakic jersey. I had to wait until after his rookie season and got the authentic #19.

Not top ten in the world in terms of skills. Absolutely top 3 in terms of hockey IQ and leadership. Overall he's right on the brink as you said.

That is how I remember him...as game savvy as they come....more of a big game great player, I didn't realize he had racked up 600 goals though.

I don't follow hockey anymore.

If I had to pick 10 players to be on my team for the playoffs......he would DEFINETLY be in my TOP TEN............that qualifies in someway to being the TOP TEN player in the world I reckon.

Impressive but the most impressive milestone goal of the season was my boy Mats Sundin's 500th goal.

It was earlier on in the year, it was in overtime, it was for the hat-trick and it was for the win. Mats picks up the puck in his own zone, blazes down the left side and blows a rocket past the arm of Mikka Kiprusoff.

WOW! The Air Canada Center erupted and that was a classic goal.

Congrats to Joe anyways...

As far as playoff performance, he is without question a must have. I assumed we were speaking more in general terms. But at the end of the day, the playoffs are what counts. Mea culpa.

well stated. With age, like everyone, his skills have eroded. He uses his hockey acumen to move forward.

top 10 in the world? no way

Given his knowledge of the game, I fully expect coaching opportunities to be available if Joe so chooses. Something tells me that his humility and quiet nature may just lead him elsewhere.

a classy gent as well....

Top 5 players in my era (born in 1971)

1. Wayne Gretzky
2. Mario Lemiuex
3. Paul Coffey
4. Steve Yzerman
5. Joe Sakic

Plenty of other great ones, but when you add up ALL the intangibles, including CLUTCH players...these are without a doubt the top 5.

No doubt about it.

He even helped the Bruins get to the finals two times!

You know as well as I do that the BRUINS never ever committ to winning the CUP..........good for RAY to leave and get the ring.

Your calling RAY a sellout..........and how many GREAT years did he give BRUINS fans???

so tough to make these kind of lists. You have to chose only 5, leaving out many quality players. For example, to have Sakic on that list and leave out Forsberg? in their hay day, Peter was the better overall player. A fantastic face off man, great defensive player, a HORSE to get off the puck. In addition to being a critical playoff performer (as well as International performer). What about Messier? Patrick Roy? J Jagr?

I have never seen, and likely will never see again a SMOOTHER, pure skater than Paul Coffey. That guy was a freak.

Mistaflava--HOW MANY times did Bourque turn his back on his country for International play?........fuckin selfish ass.....

True, a TOP FIVE list is impossible........

MESSIER was dominant.........perhaps the best player for a five year span that I've ever seen.
