It seems like the entire world was watching ...and remember back then CBS showed one game a week on Sunday and that game was it.

The Doctor picks up the loose ball around mid court with the Lakers defensive special Michael Cooper contending wth him as they both glide towards the hoop http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbQKzTg0SPI

Chick Hearn "he rocked the baby to sleep"....He made these dunks look so easy....Erving was way ahead of his time.

JMAN....should have seen his dunks in the ABA with the red, white, and blue ball.....alot of great players in the old league that posters tend to forget, like Connie Hawkins....It is really a shame that I hate watching the NBA since around 1995, sometimes I'd rather watch soccer or hockey...it just isn't the same since Bird,Magic, and Jordan retired.....sorry for the rant but the Dr. was the man.....

Jordan in the Dunk Contest is it for me... Even though Dr. J did it first, he was before my time.

And it's like the commentator said. It wasnt to showboat, it was to protect the ball from Cooper.

Exactly...Erving's dunks always within the game, you didn't see him taking off on brekaways and doing 360's like he could have....he was so far ahead of his time....

Remember back a few years ago part of the dunk contest was the players had to recreate his old dunks and much to the surprise of most , the current players couldn't emulate his...either they couldn't glide thru the air or couldn't quite grip the ball the way he did, twist in air or whatever it was, the dunks were untouchable.

Proving his repetoire was truly a timeless collection .

I was thinking about ho many great dunks were never captured on film for all to see...

The ABA would have flourished had ESPN been around back then....no doubt it would have been a marriage made in heaven for the fledgling league.
