Anyone who thinks there'd be one less fan in attendance in 2007 because Mark McGwire hit 70 home runs is out of touch.

Sports fans are suckers and will show up no matter what happens.

MLB could strike for an entire season (which they basically have already done , more than once) and the fans would still come back.

I think there are more baseball fans today because of that homerun race between McGuire and Sosa, I'd say there are a lot of kids who started watching basball because of it are and are still fans today. All the media attenion that got had to bring in new fans in my opinion anyway

I don't think he "saved" baseball per se.... but I think he and Sosa saved that season because it was headed towards record low attendance and ratings.

It was a magical season, I remember it well.

And it caused Todd McFarlane to spend millions$ on baseballs he won via auctions that were hit by cheaters.
