Johnson suffered a heart attack while playing a pick-up game during a practice and collapsed. He was later pronounced dead. Celtics executive director of baskeball operations Danny Ainge confirmed Johnson's passing.

DJ was a great guy. His idol was Walt Frazier and was cool just like him. Funny story is one time on a Friday night I was out at a club partying away and in walks DJ...so I say right away who won Celts or Bulls ( a rarity that I did not watch a game back then) he said we lost. I said how many Jordan get he said: "I do not know, 50"....since he always covered Jordan I did not know what to say.

DJ was a clutch performer. One of those rare athletes that rose to the occassion in the big games. In the 84 finals he was HUGE. He won game 4 on a jump shot and in game 7 stole the ball and took it strong to the hoops several times to finish the Lakers off. He was a perfect Celtic and will be missed.

RIP Dennis Johnson.

Damn, thats awful.

DJ would bounce the ball once for every year he had been in the NBA on every free throw attempt.

GREAT ballplayer.........AWESOME player!

He was so UNDERrated on the CELTS championship teams...........being overshadowed by the other stars on the team.

Barry Stevens and DJ gone in the same day............this is overwhelming.

Absolutely loved that lil' court general..as a Sonic, Sun, and Celt.

Loved him with Downtown Freddie Brown playing for Coach Wilkins in late '70s.

Sad.

Wow, this comes as a surprise. DJ was a fixture in the SoCal area after his playing days and the Celtics and Pepperdine families will miss him.

When I hear his name, the first thing that pops in my head is the famous steal by DJ and the pass to Bird who lays it in..."DJ steals the ball..." I can hear the announcer's voice clear as day in my head.

RIP DJ.

Good call. But I think it was Bird who made the steal and he passes it to DJ. Famous moment to beat the Pistons in game five. Johnny Most was the Celtic legendary announcer. Good call again.

You are right...my dyslexic moment of the day. Either way, a great play.

These athletes dropping dead with no warning scares the shit out of me.

here's the play "Bird to DJ" ..I remember betting my friend Detroit would win this game, 5 bucks,,,remember Bill Walton laughing on the bench, and Johnnie Most's call heard later.

Unfortunately, this is another reminder that tomorrow is promised to no one. Enjoy your life. It is the only one you have.

NBA TV is doing a tribute right now playing one of his old games with the Sonics against the Suns.
