(February 23, 2007)— Oliver Tomlinson, 71, the father of San Diego Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson was killed in a traffic accident Friday afternoon at the intersection of FM 2643 and FM 434 near the town of Asa east of Waco.
Tomlinson’s brother, Ronald C. McClain, 48, was injured in the crash and later died at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center.
The two men were returning to their home in Falls County from Waco and McClain was at the wheel when the truck drifted to the right and McClain overcorrected, Department of Public Safety Cpl. Charlie Morgan said.
The truck went into a skid and flipped onto its side.
Neither man was wearing a seatbelt and both were ejected, Morgan said.
The truck came to rest on its side at a gravel storage area.
There were reports that a blowout may have caused the truck to veer to the right.
LaDainian Tomlinson was reared in Waco by his mother and was estranged from his father, but as a youngster did visit Tomlinson Hill where his father lived on the same block as uncles, aunts and cousins, according to a New York Times story published last month.
A posting on the San Diego Chargers’ Web Site said Tomlinson “is believed to be en route to Central Texas to be with his family.”
“The entire Chargers Family is extremely saddened by this tragic news,” President Dean Spanos said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with L.T. and his entire family.”
LaDainian Tomlinson won the NFL's MVP award in 2006.
He played football at Waco's University High School before going on to star at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth.
