I remodeled a house this summer. Painted every single inch of that house inside and out. Ceilings too.

This however is an absolute impossible question to answer without knowing the size of the house. My house was 3 bedrooms. .

I went through about 5 gallons of ceiling paint, and 7-9 gallons of interior paint for the inside.

7 gallons for the outside

Sherwin Williams is an excellent place to get good paint. It may cost more, but it will last a lot longer and you will use less to cover the same area as with bargain brands.
Also, buy good brushes. They will pay for themselves many times over.

when doing the outside don't forget you need primer first. Good paint is expensive but worth the high cost. The real cost of painting is labor and with good paint you will not have to repaint for 10 years. Bad paint and you will need to repaint in 4 years.

It also depends on what kind of color of paint you're looking for. Regular eggshell white paint cost about $10 a can at my local Big Lot but if you're looking for custom colors then it might go up to $30-$50 a can of paint.

K-Mart, Sears or other stores like that have paint that's less expensive than paint stores for the exact same paint/color. You mentioned painting the interior and exterior, a couple people chimed in on the outdoors so here's something to consider for the interior. Gloss/semi-gloss, textured walls/ceilings, are any of the rooms for children (if so get a "wash-able type). Having done this with a spray gun and by hand, if/when I have to repaint again, I'll be using brushes and rollers. The spray gun was fast in getting the job completed but the paint smell lingered longer verses the brushes and rollers. As others have mentioned for the exterior if you can afford it, avoid the cheap $8-$10 gallon stuff - unless you want to repaint in a couple of years. The only problem I had, and this is age related, was doing the ceiling but once got the extender rollers, it wasn't that bad (but I wouldn't want to do it again for a while). A professional service will save you the work factor and you'll get a guarantee on the work for 'x' number of months/years but this is something most people can do themselves. Lastly, and this applies for both indoor and outdoor painting, buy a couple of extra gallons (of each) for touch ups so there will be an exact match. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info...If I were to hire a professional crew to paint the interior of the house, an average sized 3 bedroom home, and they included the price of paint, how much would it cost as a rough estimate, it doesnt have to be exact...

Also, same question, but exterior also?

The best thing I can tell you is to get at least three written estimates from those companies in your area. Costs will vary by region of the country. Make sure you get all the estimates for the same things - I know sounds simplistic, but you/others might be swayed by a sales pitch. Start by making phone calls to services you are 100% certain you will not use. I know that sounds mean, but this way when you get to the ones coming over, you'll have a better understanding.

I just remembered something that could apply to your situation. If your roof is flat, one might consider getting a reflecting sun ray type of paint - keeps the outside temps outside.

Pyro, a good rule of thumb for inside is this, $150-$200 per room including the cost of paint. Outside depending on the style? rancher/bi level, etc and type of finish. I painted for some with my own buisness and the cash was very good. Outside painting is where the money is. If your home is a basic 3 bedroom rancher, older siding possibly, you can get the entire home gutters and all done for most likely $1000-1500 including cost of paint.

Pyro, one word of advice is, the money to be made is outside. Much more appealing. Inside work must be neat clean and tidy and it is very difficult to find employees with those type of standards especially in someone else's home. Outside painting is where the money is, when I was doing decks, I had 2 guys working for me and a 15x15 deck was easily finished in one day and I was charging $600.00 per deck. Two guys I paid that did most of the work was $200 in labor plus the cost of material tops was $100 (2 gallons of stain) the rest was in pocket. I could not get the work done fast enough, stay lower with your prices and you will be in buisness as long as you want. Decks and outside is where the money is at, and also commerical if you can. Biggest problem you will run into with painters is finding one that is experienced and one's that will stay out of trouble and show up for work. Most painters that need work will be getting scooped up from now to April, after that you are left with the shitheads that either cannot get work because of their reputation or they just plain suck ass. I could go on and on, if you need something let me know.

One of my best friends is a painter and has been for 20+ years. At one time he had 10 or so employees, but now just likes having a one man show. He does mostly just high end stuff like 750k + homes as he does not like dealing with the people. He usually gets the keys to the house and works at his own pace and his own hours while the customers are back up north. He does not advertise at all and stays as busy as he wants. His advice is to get in with interior decorators and do a great job and you will have as much work as you can handle. But the number one thing he advises is to NEVER work new construction. Pain in the ass getting your money and you always have someone coming in behind and screwing things up where you have to go back and touch up.

Im going to charge about $300 per room....So a full interior house would approximately cost $1,500....

Still trying to figure out exterior of house prices, and power washing costs...

Feel free to chime in
