Not ready to rest quite yet, the Patriots [team stats] continued their offseason assault today by making former Eagles wide receiver Donte’ Stallworth their latest acquisition.
<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0><TBODY><TR><TD height=8><SPACER type="block" height="8" width="8"></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE> Stallworth, 26, has played five years in the league, his first four with the New Orleans Saints. His best season was in 2005 when he caught 70 passes for 945 yards and seven touchdowns. Last season, he played 12 games for the Eagles while being troubled with a sore hamstring. He caught 38 balls for 725 yards - a 19.1 yards-per-catch average. He scored five touchdowns. Stallworth has averaged more than 15 yards per catch for his career.
<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0><TBODY><TR><TD height=8><SPACER type="block" height="8" width="8"></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE> The news was first reported by ESPN.com, which said that the Pats and Stallworth have agreed on a six-year contract believed to be worth around $30 million, with close to $12 million guaranteed.
<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0><TBODY><TR><TD height=8><SPACER type="block" height="8" width="8"></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE> A threat on the outside, Stallworth certainly could fill the Pats’ No. 1 receiver needs. Earlier this offseason, the Pats traded for Wes Welker, who previously has done his best work out of the slot.
<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0><TBODY><TR><TD height=8><SPACER type="block" height="8" width="8"></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE> One item worth watching is a report from The Philadelphia Inquirer which said that Stallworth is in the NFL’s substance abuse program. If accurate, that means that Stallworth potentially has one or two strikes against him and another failed test could mean a substantial suspension.
<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0><TBODY><TR><TD height=8><SPACER type="block" height="8" width="8"></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE> Stallworth was also reportedly considering Miami, Tennessee, San Francisco and Philadelphia. But the Pats apparently swayed him and now he joins Welker, Jabar Gaffney [stats], Reche Caldwell [stats] and a rehabilitating Chad Jackson in a much improved wide receiver corps.

thing is...its not just the signings...the contracts are perfectly structured...nothing that will hamstring them, if they dont pan out:

"Patriots agreed to terms with WR Donte' Stallworth on a six-year contract. Stallworth will earn $3.6 million in 2007 before a series of bonuses totaling $9.6 million are due in 2008.

It's essentially a one-year deal, a gutsy move by Stallworth. Stallworth will need to be truly exceptional for New England to consider paying him $11 million in 2008 without restructuring the deal."

Peyton needs 2 or more of those bad boys...when discussing the comparisons w/ the Pats...Patriots were one third conversion of beating his ass again...remember that...he got his first, congrats...

Ive seen teams like the Raiders and Redskins in the past throw money around on big names and still have a mediocre season.

However im no guru, but these players with this team is a really good match. Plus I don't think these guys carry around any super egos.

With that in mind and with Bill and Brady. Superbowl is looking real good.

HUGE DIFFERENCE, 2plays...

The Skins / Raiders throw around 'guaranteed' money that essentially kills a teams' salary cap...Patriots were estimated $30 million UNDER the cap...and each of these signings are structured in a way, that they can squash the contract in a heart beat if a player doesnt pan out.

Someone like a Randy Moss, Adam Archuleta, David Patten, etc (Raiders, Skins free agent signings)...its a complete salary hit, and no 'out' clause.

If Stallworth doesnt perform = he doesnt get payed.

If Randy Moss doesnt perform = he gets payed.

doesnt get much better than that.

I hate to rain on the parade but Donte Stallworth = Cancer to a lockerroom....hope it isnt terminal. the best place for him on a team is the injured list

Very true, Pro...

I wasnt excited about the signing to begin with...but nobody can argue the contract & potential.

If he doesn't perform..he can go sit in the 'Doug Gabriel' seat on the bench...and they can rid themselved of the contract after year 1.

For him to sign a bonus structured contract...when many teams were looking at his services...means, he wants to prove something...I would assume to be the case, because i'm sure teams like Tennessee, Miami, etc were offering him better contracts then what he received.

X Colts,Pitt. are one trick ponies.basically blow their load and are all done.
The Pats are multi orgasmic and will probably have three or more violent tremors after their "down" years.
I mean you've got your Jerry Lee Lewis's and Roy Orbisons but there is only one Flying Elvis.

PPP, Thats what theyu said about Corey Dillion and he now holds the alltime Pats rushing record, and of course he got his ring.

Im sure he thought he'd be contending in philly as well but when it comes down to it he's lazy and wont do the work....he'll go to that hamstring card quicker than i can lose a hand...hey i was his #1 fan coming out of tennessee but he'll have to do a 180 cus so far he's the Aaron Brooks of wideouts..

Already shaping up to be another LONG season for AFC East rivals. Pats really got their stuff together. Hate them, but kudos to them for knowing how to do stuff right.

They were one bug-eyed wideout upgrade away from another trophy last year - it's scary to see what they've added this offseason.

I'd make NE big favorites this coming year.

It is basically them, Indy, and SD. They beat SD in SD and Indy was extremely lucky to win. Congrats to them, but one interference call or late hit call done right and INdy doesnt win that game.

In any case, NE's only weaknesses were LBs getting old and no receivers. Look what they did and they still have 2 first rounders.
