He was MLB commisioner for quite a long time and actually had a backbone, something that MLB could use again.

When Charlie Finley tried to sell off his great Oakland A's team , Kuhn stepped in and said no....Finley tried to sell Vida Blue to the Reds , who were the best in baseall at the time....he also kept Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle out of MLB for many years, due to their association with casinos.

Died today, age 80.

The game really did change a great deal under Kuhn, he came along in 1969 and was commisioner for 15 years, a lot of transition in his tenure...including the switch to 4 divisions and the new format that included playoffs in each league(1969) ...the first World Series night game (1971 Pitt)

Free Agency starting with the Curt Flood court case, the DH rule 1973,the MLB work stoppage (1974) astro turf became very popular around that time, along with the cookie cutter-cereal bowl style stadiums....George Stenibrenner , the 1981 strike which lasted almost two months to name just a few.

His tenure was the very best of MLB in my opinion.
