Been looking at the viewsat or pansat receivers and would like feedback from anyone using them. Are they difficult to setup and install? Also can you get all the MLB and NFL games on the local affliates? If so how hard is it to find them? Been looking at a few sites like freetoairreceivers and dsstester but its hard to understand how it all works because I am not familiar with some of the terms they use. Since my cable company will no longer be offering MLB extra innings I am looking at ways to still see the games.
Any feedback or good sites to visit for info is appreciated

freetoairreceivers seems to have some good info but I wanted to get feedback from someone that has it already. Mainly looking to get sports related programming like MLB, NFL, etc...

Viewsat is the quickest with software upgrades over other brand of receivers. They're always the first up and yes you get baseball on the Fox affiliates.

I bought mine off EBAY a few years ago. Just look for a good rating.

In regard to the NFL games, you get all the local channels in your "spotbeam" area. You're in the NY area like me so it's: NY, Philly, Boston, Washington, Pitt., Baltimore. Then some out of area locals like: SF, Chicago, Denver, and Atlanta. You get at least 80% of the games on Sunday.

Tony, how do one of these work? Do I need dishnetwork or directtv service?

The reciever picks up the Dishnet signal (also picks up Bell expressvu the Canadian verison as well a host of others if you point the dish right) Basically the wiring outside is exactly the same as if you were installing dishnet but instead of using a dishnet receiver you use a Viewsat receiver. When you turn on the receiver you do a Sat Scan for the channels (Dishnet runs on two dishes but anyway that is tech talk im just giving you the basic's) once you download the channels you are good to go basically. When it goes down you either have to input a new set of keys which you have to do via your remote or apply a new firmware patch and install it on your receiver via a USB cable or null modem cable depending on the box you have,

I have a Pansat 3500SD and can defintely say it was a good investment.

I have had it for now over on year, and it has been up a lot more than it was down (only major downtime during last summer).

I only use this box for one room in the house, and have Dish Network/DirecTV (I switch every once in a while depending on sports packages) throughout the rest of the house.

Always watch the PPV events such as UFC on the Pansat box, has saved me hundreds if not thousands already!

So what happens when the box goes "down". Are the signals scrambled by the networks and you have to descramble the signals? And how do you do this, do you have to connect the receiver to your pc and download the updates.

Well, with my Pansat 3500SD I have an SD card that I insert into a card reader and download the updates to from the internet. Then I inset this SD card into the reciever. That is all there is to it.

This past summer it did take several months for it to come back up, but it has been solidly up most, if not all of the time, before and after that time period.

You have a black screen and yes you just download the newest software from your computer. What happens is, Dish will change the "keys" as they say.

how often does this happen? i see hundreds of these on ebay, how has this gone by so long without being illegal? all the ones for sale say 100% legal.

and also why does this not work for directv? if they have figured a way around this, how long before dish does the same thing? sorry for all the questions

It's 100& legal to get the Free to air channels, just not legal to point your satellite dish to Dish Network's satellite, if you catch my drift..

Also, sometimes the maker (Viewsat, Pansat, Coolsat, etc), will need to release a "BIN" file that you will have to load onto your reciever, either directly via a special cable, or via SD card if you have an SD-card capable reciever (such as the Pansat 3500SD).

The keys roll every once in a while, but have not really rolled recently. It differs in the time of year and when DN feels like rolling them (rolling means changing the keys). It is a simple login to a web site or porgram that displays the newest keys and you punching them into a menu screen on the reciever.

Small price to pay for free PPV, premium channels, etc.

It's legal.... until you put the decoding software on it.:103631605 You can actually use it to legally pick up the BS channels out there that nobody watches.

Dish encryption is way different from Direct TV. Actually decided to get rid of my regular sub when the hackers came up with a way to get around the toughest part of the encryption, which was called "map 57" section of the coding. Everyone was down last year for almost two months (I believe it was that long) and then coders broke it and that was it for Dish.
