Congrats Xavier! Another coach lets the other team tie it instead of fouling....I will never understand this philosophy.

this is especially bad in college where a top of the key jumper gets you 3, seems like half the players shoot 30% or better from out there.

How many intentailly missed free throws are rebounded and put back in? No way it is anything near 30%

not only that, the other team doesnt even have to try and get the rebound off the missed FT

Just swat the thing as hard as you can down the court
JUMP AND SWAT

I will never understand it.

Foul them when they get close to shooting. They then have to make a free throw, then miss, then get the offensive rebound, then make a shot to beat you!!!!!!!! Its either that or make a three pointer. I would say the three point conversion rate is higher the the other scenario!

Texas did it against TEXAS AM.....just about screwed them should have been an intentional foul then they had a bunny layup to tie on a purposley missed free throw

Yep, and Oden had fouled out, so the chances of the Bucks getting the offensive board on a missed FT wouldn't have been very good either

refs will never call intentional there....just look at the Oden foul, no way they call an intentional, and...Texas did win.

it seriously baffles me, as well J-Man....

the only excuse they use...is, they're afraid of fouling while the player is 'act of shooting'

well...even so, I would take my chances (as a coach w/ a lead) with a kid trying to hit three free throws, when game is on the line...when college kids hitting 70% from the line is classified as 'good'.

ex: eearlier this year...Aaron Brooks of Oregon...90% free throw shooter...fouled in act of shooting, when trying to intentional foul...missed a free throw.

As a coach w/ a lead, I would def. take my chances w/ a kid at the foul line hitting three in a row, then a momentum three point shot...and thats the worst case scenario, and its still in the coach's/winning team's favor, in my opinion.

I agree, Jman ... Steve Lavin said that you have to FOUR things if the other team fouls you late:

  • make the first free throw (80% - that is generous)
  • miss the second free throw (99% - I have seen players miss the rim)
  • get the offensive rebound (25% chance)
  • score QUICK (50% chance of scoring - even less if you have to score quick)

Probability = 10% at best and maybe 5%

Probability of hitting a three = 25% (even if a dud shoots it)

If it were that easy, teams would start missing their 2nd free throw attempts during the game too.

I personally would rather have to make them make the three to put it into overtime than have a chance to lose the game without OT.

Huh?
The whole point in fouling is to allow them to score one or two pts-with the percentage of hitting the first FT, missing the second on purpose, and getting the rebound and put back going down in succession as opposed to hitting a "NBA" three. The only way the foul can back fire on you is if they hit the first, and hit a three off the rebound of the second-which has to be less than .5% chance of happening.

I would have to guess that it would be higher than 1 out of 200 times times could you lose. I think there would be a pretty decent chance of either your scenario happening or there being a foul on the put back and giving them a chance of a conventional 3 point play.
