Guys I need some advice on my golf swing. I know some of you are great players and have some drills or tips to help work out bugs in your swing. My problem is I am not "Releasing" the club durning my downswing. I feel myself kinda dragging the club head through the impact zone, therefore costing me distance. When I try to force myself to release, I just pull the ball or snap hook it. Is there a specific drill I can practice to help me with this.

Harvey Pennick says buy a sickle and go cut the grass. Best exercise to hone your swing. But I suck. You need Max or VD to chime in here.

hit balls with your feet together . you have to release the club doing this.

hit about 30 or 40 range balls using your 7 iron .

see if that helps for starters .

i like to hit balls with my feet together. hell, in my swing my feet are the narrowest of any golfer most have ever seen for a good release.

MY THOUGHTS ARE TO SWING A GOOD BROOM, NOT A CHEAP ONE.
THIS FIXES ALL PARTS OF THE SWING FROM TURN, WRIST COCK, AND DOWNSWING, WITH THE WEIGHT OF THE CLUB AT THE END AND THE LENGTH IS GREAT. REMEMBER, YOU CAN NOT SWING A BROOM OVER THE TOP

GA

if you try to hit your right foot on the downswing and swing to right field you can't have a better swing thought

I like to try to visualize hitting my tee shot into right-center field. This enables me to go after it aggresively but prevents me from snapping or yanking it left. Just my 2 cents.

If you pull or snap hook the ball, you might want to check your initial move from the top. You may very well be on a slight out to in path and the ball flight certainly suggests this. Need to get your hands on plain at the top. Check your address, as well, possible you kave your hands to far back in the set-up or to the right. Get them further left and this will help to flatten the plain and also allow you left side to control the down swing.

I am pretty sure there is no application - I believe you have to be invited - there are no dues - everytime they do something to the course they just appropriate it to all the members.

Thanks for the tips guys. I am going to the range tomorrow to work on a few things. I played the other day and starting to catch the fever again. Usually weight transfer is my biggest issue. Also, I find myself dipping down to start my downswing, causing me to hit behind the ball. There are severals small things I need to work on. We need to all get together for a RX golf weekend somewhere like myrtle beach or somewhere on the RTJ trail for a few rounds. Golf in the day, Poker at night.

Try Vijay's #1 drill. Tuck a thin towel under your left arm (assuming you are right handed) and swing, keeping the towel tucked under your arm and close to your body. If you force yourself to keep your left elbow tucked tight into your body, your hands will naturally drop into the slot and your club will release.

When you try to make your hands release instead of your hips and lower body leading the way, you will snap hook.

It's a tough drill, but if done with a little help, really helps to release the club properly and generate tons of power.

It's a real tough drill the way you describe it....try the towel under the right elbow though if you're right-handed. I've never felt the need to use a towel but just concentrate on keeping my right elbow touching my body and bringing the butt end of the club down towards the ball to start the downswing and find the slot. Practice, and a couple of drinks to loosen up, always helps too!

BankerC, it is very hard for me to figure out your swing flaws without being up close and personal. However, you have thrown out a few clues. Two things determine the direction of your golf shots. 1) angle of your club face 2) path of your swing. When I learned to play in the early 60's, we were taught to swing the golf club by pronating(opening the club face) with our forearms and "releasing" them back to square on the downswing. That takes great timing and cordination. The modern swing is square to an arc and if done properly is easier to repeat and much more powerful. You must have a proper grip and setup to ever have a chance to play decent golf. Now I'm going to address the two issues(releasing the club and dipping) that you mentioned. I have a feeling that your grip is too much in your palms and probably too weak. Make sure you get the club more in your fingers which will let you hinge(cock) your wrists and release the golf club.I believe the dipping is caused by what they refer to as a reverse pivot. Your body is shifting towards your left foot on your backswing which causes your head to go down then up on your follow through. I want you to forget the idea of weight shift and think only of turning back and then through. I originally thought you were swaying off the ball(until you mentioned dipping), which makes it almost impossible to release the club. Try to feel like your right side(palm and forearm) is underneath the shaft at address. I apologize for being so "wordy", but I have been around almost all the the famous and not so famous golf instructors in my lifetime. Good Luck
