DES MOINES, Iowa -- Sources inside the Iowa basketball program confirmed that head coach Steve Alford has reached a deal to become the new basketball coach at the University of New Mexico, KCCI Sports Director Heidi Soliday reported.
Alford will be introduced as the new head coach at a news conference Friday in Albuquerque. Soliday reported that Alford has returned to Iowa City from a Florida vacation and will likely be meeting with his players on Thursday. She will have live reports from Iowa City throughout the day on KCCI.
Alford has been head coach at the University of Iowa since 1999. He has a 152-106 record and has made three appearances in the NCAA tournament. Many fans have been disappointed in the lack of more regular post-season appearances
