John Calipari facetiously says he just rolls the balls out at practice, but the Atlanta Tipoff Club has recognized him for doing much more than that.
On Thursday, the Atlanta Tipoff Club named Coach Cal one of four finalists for the Naismith College Coach of the Year. Calipari was nominated alongside Jim Boeheim (Syracuse), Frank Haith (Missouri) and Bill Self (Kansas).
Voted this year’s Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year by the league coaches and the Associated Press, Calipari led the Wildcats to a 32-2 mark heading in the NCAA Tournament, a 16-0 mark in regular-season SEC play, as well as the nation’s top ranking for eight straight weeks, the longest streak at Kentucky since the 1977-78 season.
Replacing three NBA Draft picks (four if you count Enes Kanter), Coach Cal hauled in the nation’s top recruiting class for a third straight year, meshed it together with Terrence Jones, Doron Lamb and Darius Miller, and led the team the NCAA Tournament’s No. 1 overall seed.
Calipari also broke the UK record for consecutive home wins in Rupp Arena this year, extending his streak to 51 straight games.
Coach Cal has won the award twice, in 2008 and 1996. If he wins it again this season, he will become only the second coach to earn the honor three times, joining Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski.
Heading into Thursday night’s second-round NCAA Tournament game against Western Kentucky, Calipari owns a 541-154 (77.8 winning percentage) career on-court record. He’s one of only two coaches to lead three different teams to the Final Four, and he’s leading his 14th team to the NCAA Tournament this season.
The finalist were determined by the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s National Voting Academy, comprised of leading basketball journalists, coaches and administrators from around the country. The academy based its criteria on coaching performances this season.
The winner will be announced at the Naismith Awards Welcome Brunch on April 1 in New Orleans.
