Not the Hoyas' fault that the refs botched it, though. I just feel terrible for the Vandy players...how do you tell those guys that they did everything right on that last possession, played great D, yet still get eliminated through no fault of their own.
My coach used to tell us, don't put yourself in the position where a no call or missed call at the end of the game will screw you.
There was a Westchester county championship game last week in NY. (HS)
The ref is considered the finest HS ref working the games,
all the county coaches love this ref.
I'll cut to the chase, it was a one point game, late 4th, 3 seconds on the game clock, 0.1 on the shot clock, trailing teams player chucks up a prayer, that *seems* to scrape the bottom of the rim, trailing teams center under the bucket, picks up the ball, lays it in with 1 second left.
Game over !
Hours later that evening, after breaking down the video tape, ball never touched the rim, no player on the court protested that call, nor the fans, the only way anybody could tell was in slow motion video replay.
When the ref found out about it the next day, he called the school that got hosed (Damn, I forgot the two HS teams that played that game)
AD, the head coach, and the key players profusely apologizing, the head coach said he was welcome to ref any of his teams.
The ref is a class act, point I'm trying to make here is, don't put yourself is a position where a bad call will screw you.
