Pat, based on your question, you're seeking accessible/crossover jazz...sorta guitar based,eh. I think Metheny is a good entry point for you. Later, you make want to check out Allan Holdsworth.

add a little funk to the mix and pick up...Medeski, Martin, and Wood's Combustication....very good jazz/funk cd

they also have a new album out with a guitarist that is pretty good....
Medeski, Scofield, Martin, and Wood "Out Louder"

the previous person that mentioned Scofield's "A Go Go" failed to mention that MMW is featured on that album as well. Scofield is one of the premier jazz guitarist.

Yes, I was short on details, MMW is most certainly featured on that album. I'm a big MMW fan, but didn't mention them because he initially said "I like it somewhat structered other than the all over the place horn shit." While MMW doesn't use horns, I think we can both agree that they are all over the place at times.

However, the stuff they do with Scofield tends to be more structured.

Love Stan Getz personally Pat especially his work when he went to Brazil. Traditional jazz I'm not that versed outside of a little of Charlie Byrd and the other well knowns but Smooth Jazz as far as strings are concerned, check out Ronny Jordan, Pat Methany, Lee Ritenour and few others that escape my mind.

Good thread.

Scofield is great, never had heard of him before.

Only just had listened to two of his songs, but I liked them. I wish everything could be as awesome as "Breez'n". But it's not that way.

skipped past the structured line in his request....
but definitely the latest album has structure to it....Scofield and the boys playing Beatles' 'Julia' is fantastic!

A lot of diehard Jazz heads (almost all ones who are big traditional jazz fans) that I met, don't think highly of George Benson and think he's overrated. I like George Benson though, he somewhat made jazz "commercial" in the sense that they were playing his stuff on pop, r&b radio stations. Gimme The Night and the sort. That's probably why traditional jazz fans I've met don't care for him.

Some other suggestions for you Pat: Chris Botti (horns but not all over the place), Najee, George Duke, David Sanborn, Bob James (the theme song for Taxi "Angela" was composed by James) and Grover Washington Jr. (Just the two of us with Bill Withers)

Ever heard Friday Night in San Francisco, with John McLaughlin, Paco de Lucia, and Al Di Meola? Unbelievable, a must own IMO.

This customer review says it best:
"In my opinion, this is one of the greatest live guitar performances out there. What is so remarkable is the diversity that each player has and brings to the stage. Paco plays his famous flamenco, di meola competes with his recognizable phrasing and technique, and mclaughin, well, this is probably the most open-hearted playing I've ever heard from one of the greatest abstract guitarists. Musicians adore this CD (especially guitarists), and others also have that fire for this kind of music. But, this album is, beyond a doubt, one of the most signifigant pieces of work for all 3 players and for the great music they represent. An absolute must."

Pat:

Also, speaking of piano, try to check out a disc by Sonny Rollins, Sonny Stitt, and Dizzy Gillespe called "Sonny Side Up." Fantastic.
