CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) -- Former Major League baseball pitcher Ugueth Urbina was sentenced to 14 years in prison for the attempted murder of five workers on his family's ranch, the Attorney General's Office announced Wednesday.
Urbina, a former pitcher with the Montreal Expos, Boston Red Sox, Texas Rangers, Florida Marlins, Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies, was also found guilty of illegal deprivation of liberty and violating a prohibition against taking justice into his own hands during a dispute over a gun on Oct. 16, 2005, according to a statement from the Attorney General's Office.

The 32-year-old free agent was accused of joining a group of men in attacking and injuring workers with machetes and pouring gasoline on them at his family's ranch, located about 25 miles south of Caracas.
"The ruling was too severe," said Jose Antonio Baez, a former attorney who represented Urbina.
Urbina repeatedly has denied involvement with the violence, saying he was sleeping at the time of the attack. The pitcher's lawyer, Jose Luis Tamayo, has said that Urbina surprised the workers by showing up at his ranch that night while they were bathing in the pool without permission. Urbina spoke sharply to them, but later left and went to sleep, according to Tamayo. Urbina, a two-time All-Star, last pitched in the major leagues with the Phillies in 2005. He's 30th on the all-time saves list with 237. He had two saves in the 2003 World Series for the victorious Marlins.

His middle name starts with a U as well (Urtain). So his monogram would be UUU. We may not ever see that again in our lifetime.

this pisses me off because this motherfucker only got 3 years in Jail for raping his own daughter:

Abusive dad jailed 3 years

Gave girl, 5, gonorrhea

By SAM PAZZANO, COURTS BUREAU
<!-- filename = -->
A Toronto man who infected his 5-year-old daughter with gonorrhea and left her "screaming" in agony was sentenced yesterday to three years in prison.
"She was a helpless child who loved and trusted her father, who by his actions violated that trust by abusing his child," Madam Justice Bonnie Croll said.
"Passing on gonorrhea to her caused her severe physical discomfort. She was crying in pain," Croll said in sentencing the 47-year-old man for sexual assault causing bodily harm and sexual interference for the July 2001 attack on the then 5-year-old.
"He selfishly offered no information to the mother, who could have conveyed it to the doctor (and relieved his daughter's suffering earlier by divulging he too had gonorrhea)," said the judge, who sentenced him to an additional 32 months on top of time served.
Croll said the accused bragged to police about his promiscuity and contracted both HIV and gonorrhea through unprotected sex. The judge said the accused had sexual contact -- but not intercourse -- with his child. Croll said she wouldn't conclude that intercourse occurred based "on the use of a preposition -- 'in' -- by a (child). It has not been proven beyond a reasonable doubt."
SENTENCE CRITICIZED
The judge's sentence -- which fell far short of the eight to 10 years sought by the Crown -- was sharply criticized outside court by the investigating officer and the executive director of the Toronto Child Abuse Centre.
"That short sentence gives a message to the child that this crime is not that serious. He'll spend three years or less in prison while she suffers the rest of her life," said Karyn Kennedy, director of the centre, which provides counselling, prevention and support to 1,000 abused children a year.
"Longer sentences would be a deterrent to like-minded individuals, but this sentence is barely long enough, if he did take responsibility, to take a treatment program," she said.
"In Alabama, offenders get 100 years for such a crime, but while I'm not recommending that extreme, it should be longer. When children are sexually abused by a parent, the damage is so severe it can take years to recover," Kennedy said.
"It's the ultimate breach of trust," Det. Const. Ann-Marie Tupling, the investigating officer, said. "The victim is a 5-year-old innocent. I don't think this sentence is strong enough to send the message clearly that society doesn't tolerate child abuse."

I couldn't believe he is only 32 also. Looked it up and he just turned 33 in Feburary. Still hard to believe.

When the Tigers traded him 2 years ago this summer there was a little uproar because they had given up on the season by dropping him and Kyle Farnsworth during July when they still had an outside chance to finish .500 (which was a huge goal) and maybe grab wildcard berth. They ended up getting Placido Polanco for Urbina, trade looking better by the minute.

Basically this sentence amounts to a fine of I'd guess about $3million. Someone in his family will make a payment to the government and he will be released in a few months.

Why did he go back to Venezuela and get involved with a bunch of bustouts in the first place? He had to be the "King of Shit" down there. If there was some dirty work to be done, anyone with his money would have hired a few "bodyguards" to do it. But no...he makes 3 million a year (or whatever) and wanted to put himself in a situation where he has a bunch of guys making $200 a month around him, so he could be the "King of Shit". Now he'll be the "King of Shit" in the joint.

I wonder if Omar Minaya will figure out a way to get this guy out of jail and on the Mets. This guy is right up his alley. :103631605
