Cougars scratch and claw to victory over Mustangs
The Lady Mustangs knew they had their work cut out for them on Friday night, having to travel to enemy territory to take on the District Co-Leaders, Nimitz Lady Cougars. Not only were the Mustangs facing a team with a 9 game winning streak, but they had to face Nimitz’s outstanding post player, Brittany Greiner, who had her way with Memorial in the teams’ first meeting earlier in the season. The evening started ominously as Greiner, who was introduced as 6’5” in the teams’ first meeting, was introduced as 6’6” during the pre-game introduction. Not many kids grow an inch in 3 weeks. Next year at this time she could be 7 feet tall. Credit Memorial’s post tandem of Marissa Elliott, Cristen Moerer, and Barbara Thompson for fighting her tooth and nail all night and limiting the talented Greiner to just 10 points. Coach Cronin’s strategy for dealing with Greiner was superb, but we had no counter to Nimitz’s talented point guard Jessica Diamond who scored 17 points, including several key 3 point shots. In the end, after battling valiantly, the Lady Mustangs lost to the Cougars 48-36, although the good guys clearly outplayed Nimitz in the second half.
