Carpenter has sore elbow, will miss next start
The appearance of Skip Schumaker in tonight’s Cardinals starting lineup -- Schumaker gets the start in right field -- is news enough.
But of bigger significance is the report that staff ace Chris Carpenter will miss at least his next start because of some right elbow inflammation.
Carpenter, who complained of stiffness and soreness in the elbow after his start on Sunday night, was examined by Dr. George Paletta after laboring through six innings in a 6-1 loss to the New York Mets.
Carpenter, who gave up five runs and threw a high total of 101 pitches in the six innings, was to have started again on Friday night in Houston, but his spot will be taken by righthander Adam Wainwright, who was to have started Saturday.
Righthander Anthony Reyes will be bumped from Sunday to Saturday and righthander Kip Wells, who was to make his Cardinals debut Tuesday night, will make his second start Sunday at Houston rather than Monday at Pittsburgh. Addressing Schumaker before the game, manager Tony La Russa said, "he earned the start."

The lefthanded-batting Schumaker batted over .400 for most of spring training and singled in his only at-bat on Sunday.
La Russa, who thought too much attention was given to his not playing Chris Duncan on Opening Night -- Duncan is in Tuesday’s lineup -- did not expand much on Schumaker’s insertion other than to say again, "He’s earned the start."
Schumaker will hit eighth with center fielder Jim Edmonds moved to fifth and second baseman Adam Kennedy to sixth. Catcher Yadier Molina dropped from fifth to seventh.
Edmonds, who missed all but the last week of spring training games, has "ouches," La Russa said after the first game. La Russa is not sure how long Edmonds will be able to play tonight.
Scott Spiezio, who started many games in the outfield this spring, will not start tonight either because "his back is barking," La Russa said. Spiezio had some issues with neck spasms late in spring training and only pinch hit in the first game.
The Mets’ eight-man lineup is the same as it was Sunday -- Jose Reyes, Paul LoDuca, Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado, David Wright, Moises Alou, Shawn Green, Jose Valentin. Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez, listed as 37 but perceived to be much older, will be the Mets’ starter for a game that will feature a pre-game ceremony in which the 2006 Cardinals -- and many others will receive their World Series championship rings.
Right fielder Juan Encarnacion and pitcher Mark Mulder, neither of whom was scheduled to be here Sunday, both are on hand for the ring ceremony. The Cardinals’ living Hall of Famers all will receive rings, as will such former Cardinals as Larry Walker and Cal Eldred, who served as spring training insturctors. Walker, however, has had travel issues and won’t be here for the ceremony.
