HOME TEAM IN CAPS
All games are listed pitchers unless stated otherwise.

Florida –1½ +1.13 over WASHINGTON
Why stop playing against the Nationals now? This team resembles a Double AA team and not a pro one. They got buried again yesterday for the second straight game and now, to go along with their other ailments, they committed a bunch of errors too. They can’t hit, they can’t field and they’re so desperate they have to turn to a very young, albeit talented arm by the name of Matt Chico. Chico has been brought up way too soon and is just not ready to take on this task, that being, ready to pitch for a team that can’t give him support. Chico has never pitched above Double AA and in his final game in spring training Chico was charged with four runs on four hits and three walks over 5 2-3 innings in Washington's 6-5 loss. Anibal Sanchez did not make his major league debut until June 25, but went 10-3 in 18 appearances with 17 of those being starts. Sanchez went 6-1 with a 1.93 ERA in his last eight starts and threw the first no-hitter in the majors in 2 1/2 years against Arizona on Sept. 6. The Marlins are for real folks, this team has a lot of everything and they’re playing a minor league team again. Play Florida –1½ +1.13 (Risking 2 units). <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

NY Mets -1.03 over ST. LOUIS
John Maine will go for the Mets and he’s coming off a very decent year and a better post-season. This kid is just going to get better and one of the best things about him is his work ethic and his huge desire to improve. He also throws strikes to go along with his major league stuff. In the spring he was sharp, throwing 20 innings and walking just four while striking out 17. For the Cardinals, well, thus far they’ve committed three errors and scored a total of two runs in two games. Braden Looper will make his first ever major league start after spending nine years in the pen. Yeah, that experiment has had plenty of success in the past with others. We don’t know why more mangers don’t try that out with all the success stories its produced. Nine years of throwing to two or three guys and now that genius, Tony LaRussa, expects Looper to throw five or six innings? Yeah, ok. Look, the reason Looper or any reliever is a reliever is because they couldn’t make it a starter. Nine years later that’s not about to change. Have another drink Tony. Play: NY Mets -1.03 (Risking 2 units).

Pittsburgh +1.46 over HOUSTON
Tom Gorzelanny only pitched 61 innings last season for the Pirates but his numbers weren’t bad at all. He possesses wicked stuff but has a tendency to be a bit wild. He went 2-5 last season, however, his ERA was 3.70 and he surrendered just 50 hits and struck out 40 in those 51 frames. This spring he struck out 23 in 26 innings and worked mostly on his mechanics so we’re not going to put much weight on his spring ERA, which was over 7. Woody Williams joins the Astros and makes his Astro debut here. Williams is an old-time warrior but the fact remains that he’s 40-years-old and he’s really never been a dominant pitcher just a consistent one. Nonetheless, we’re very willing to gamble against a 40-yr-old playing for an Astro team that’s not producing thus far. That first win is sometimes the most difficult and the Pirates absolutely have a great chance for the sweep. Play Pittsburgh +1.46 (Risking 2 units).

SAN FRANCISCO –1.06 over San Diego
Get used to hearing the name Matt Cain because this Giants pitcher is on the verge of becoming one of the best pitchers in the majors. In his rookie year he won 13 games and allowed a stingy 157 hits in 190 innings of work. He also struck out 179. Last year against the Padres he went 3-0 with a miniscule ERA of 1.64. For the Padres it’ll be Chris Young, a guy that had a great year a season ago but that might just have been an aberration. His stuff is average at best but he benefited greatly from pitching at Petco Field, perhaps the best pitchers park in the game. Anyway, the bottom line here is that whenever we can get Matt Cain at home at such a short price you can pencil us in. Cain is the straight goods. Play: San Francisco –1.06 (Risking 2.12 units to win 2).

Really like the Florida game, although I'm not exactly loving the current price. May consider the run line, although I'm leaning toward staying away. Also, I think you underestimate Young. That kid has some great stuff. BOL on your plays.

sherwood,

i am a homer but looper pitched well in every start this spring except one.
maine had success in one start against the cards last year but went less than 6. when the cards stop trying to pull every pitch the soft tossing bitches the mets throw out there they will score some runs. we both know their defense will be there. not playin this game as i just want to watch my team in peace but think this is a good spot for the cards.
good luck with your plays though.
