The casinos I have been to in Puerto Rico suck (including the El Conquistador). They play the Caribbean version of BJ which means the dealer doesn't get his second card until everyone is done hitting (or standing). The video poker was total bullshit. The pitbosses start sweating if you bet $100 or more per bet. Not a great place for gambling.

Spent 6 days in Puerto Rico over Spring Break. The casinos are better than the ones in Florida but that is not saying much. Kenny is right, the pit bosses are ridiculous and the dealers are quite unprofessional. Two dealers I had both accidentally flipped over cards on a few occasions and also I did not know this, but apparently if after the deck is reshuffled a player is given the option of putting a red or blue card in the deck and she forgot to do that. The place I played at, the dealer got her second card before everyone began to hit or stand, but I only played in that one place so don't know if the rest of the island is like that.

KU, do you want to see touristy San Juan or the real Puerto Rico? Either way you definitely have to see El Morro and the other forts in Old San Juan, the El Yunque Rain Forest (take the Britton Hill trail if you're not in superb shape as you will still have beautiful views without the work of actually summitting the highest point), the beaches around Rincon, the Arecibo telescope, and the Rio Camuy cave system.

Keep in mind that once you are off the beaten path in PR, you are off the beaten path. Outside the big cities, you will have a hard time finding anyone who can speak more than a few phrases in English. Also, the roads and drivers there are absolutely horrible. Red lights are constantly run, cars constantly cut you off, people pull out soon as one lane is free on a turn and stop traffic to make a turn on to the main road, etc. If you're renting a car, the driving will get on your nerves quick, especially if you drive around as much as I did.

Other things you should see if you have enough time: the bioluminescent bay in Fajardo (the tour is steep, $40 or $45, but if the boats aren't full, you can bargain), downtown Ponce and the HUGE cross overlooking the city, as well as Las Tibes right outside of Ponce. I didn't go to Cabo Rojo, Vieques or Culebra, but I heard that those places are great and quite touristy.

Places to stay out of are Mayaguez (we were specifically told that they do not like non-locals there and one of the hobbies is to drive around looking for foreigners to beat up after a night of drinking), the Ruta Panoramica (nice for 30 minutes and some good views but the shit gets old quick), Guayama and Adjuntas (the traffic and roads here are particularly atrocious), and Humacao.

Hope this mini-guide was of some help you you KU, and if you have any questions feel free to ask and I'll answer the best I can. Have a good time there man.

..btw take the ferry boat at Fajardo to one of the islands(Vieques and Culebra). It's only 2 dollars!

If you plan on moving around the island much then yes, trying to constantly get publicos and taxis is inefficient and frustrating.

I found it funny that if you ask a Puerto Rican for good criollo (local food) they are a little bit flummoxed. The girl we were with when we asked where to go for criollo took us to Denny's. Be sure to stop in one of the numerous Condom World's on the island, just to see that ridiculous mascot. There is a place on I-3 in Luqillo by a Condom World that was the best food I ate on the island, Lolita's. They serve Mexican food and it comes out within 5-10 minutes of your order and there are ample portions.

Right. I didn't go all the way to Puerto Rico to gamble or it would have been Vegas.

It's called relaxing.

I think more gamblers should consider traveling some place and just do non gambling things for a week.

One thing I do remember about driving is all the people trying to sell you shit at red lights.

I mean seriously everything you could think of you stopped and had 5 locals on you like it was a market place.

Even donuts. So random.

You definetely need to get a rental car.I heard that a taxi would charge you 50 bucks just to take you from Paradisus Resort(where I stayed) to El Yunque. And it's only 15 minutes away.

Thanks GD

KU, Driving down there will definitely test your nerves and wits, but it is also the most logical thing to do. If you can afford it, don't get the standard rental. The standard rental is a Suzuki Aerio, and not only is it a piece of shit car, but if you are driving one, everyone knows you are a tourist. Our Aerio had a problem where every time you turned right, the thing squealed like a stuck pig. Also, make sure to either get supplemental insurance or only drive/park in extremely well lit/crowded areas at night. There is a reason Puerto Rico now has a law saying that after midnight you do not have to obey the traffic lights. Also, when going to Old San Juan park your car on the South part of the neighborhood in one of the numerous garages and pay the $5 and walk the 15-20 blocks to El Morro, it is much better than trying to find a parking spot close to El Morro as you invariably get trapped in Pearl City (the shittiest part of San Juan where people are prone to jack your car even in broad daylight) Pearl City is in between El Morro and San Cristobal and around the old city walls and is an absolute hellhole, stay out of there at all costs.
