Sorry to hear that...one of the saddest stories in sports history.

Patriots '73 draft was one of gold, Stingley, John Hannah and Sam Cunningham all drafted by New England in that draft.

I can still remember the hit. Stingley running a crossing pattern, and Tatum meeting him in the middle, helmet to helmet. Sad story. RIP Patriot !!!

Not many will remember outside of New England , Stingley was a very good WR before the tragedy pretty close to Pro Bowl caliber...Stanley Morgan was the other wideout who became the go to guy after Stingley's career ended ...

Russ Francis at TE, good RB's Calhoun, Herron and Cunningham, QB Grogan...those NE teams in '76 and '77 were very close to SB caliber.

The '76 team lost to eventual champion Raiders in the playoffs, in a close game 24-21 at Oakland, that Patriots team was the only team to defeat the 1976 Raiders and they beat them badly in New England in the regular season 48-17.

They were in a tough division with Miami and Baltimore all very good at the time.

IF there is a tougher thing in sports than going over the middle looking at the QB and ball and being defensless just knowing you are going to get leveled as the defense lines you up....please tell me what it is? This is what happened to Stiingley. I think it is the hardest thing to do in sports as far as courage and guts are concerned.

Did Tatum ever apologize to him about what happened? I know it was a legal hit, but I think he never talked to him about it is the story. Not sure.

He did not apologize for a long long time if he ever did. I think (if memory serves) he left message or something but no apology and I doubt there was even a call. Pretty bad. He might have called and talked like 25 years later but that is a little late, I would think. Iread Tatum's book "they call me assassin" years ago and the guy is vicious....just look at him, he looks like a convict. Tough break for Stingley.

he never apologized, he was set to do a face to face interview which was called off by Stingley when he found out it was to publicize Tatum's book.

I don't think an apology is necessary. Stingley knew the risks and Tatum hit him legally. May have been a nice gesture but I don't think the situation merits an apology.

Not enough bad things can happen to the Raiders and their franchise.
Tatum is rotting in a wheelchair himself limb by limb.Never said he was sorry to Stingley and actually wanted to use him as a prop for a book he was selling.I hope the Raiders curse id "tucked" up their ass forever.God Bless Daryl Stingley,RIP.

I remember the hit vividly.

It was a Saturday night pre-season game.

Was in car listening to the late Bill King when the blow was delivered.

Tatum was a punk but a very aggresive one.

I remember a game where he hit Earl Cambell with all he had on the goal line Cambell stuttered backwards and then leaned forward into the endzone and Tatum is on his knee's shaking his head.

Of course all of the above are cripples, but hey we were entertained right?

I remember it well too. It was a clean hit, hard hit. But you cant say a kind word to the man when you are in your mid 50's? What does that prove?

I don't think he had to apologize but he could have said he was sorry it happened...that is what never made sense, those old Raiders though, they lived the role 24/7.
