<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
The Cubs were 5-3 on the road in decisive game 3’s 1st half of last year including a win over the Reds at Cincy in this same situation. In my opinion, this early season game means more to the Cubs, new manager Sweet Lou, and free agent signee Jason Marquis to get off on the right foot to start the season in Cubbie uniforms.

The Cubs also have a greater advantage in the pitching matchup than this line indicates.

Although I’m not a big Jason Marquis fan, he is a pitcher that has historically started off seasons hot, while Reds starter Kyle Lohse has not. In fact, Marqui’s ERA in April at 3.99 is his best month. And that may be just what the Dr. ordered as Marquis faded down the stretch last year as the season wore on, and he will get a fresh start with a new team to make things right in his favorite part of the year: the start.

Lohse’s ERA the past 3 seasons has been significantly worse in the first month of the season than any other month. Lohse is 3-6, with a 7+ ERA in April, by far his worst month the past 3 years. This tells me Lohse is a pitcher that has a hard time settling into seasons, he takes awhile to get the feel of his pitches, and in this particular case, it may be even more difficult for him. Lohse was with Minnesota for 5 or 6 years, his home field was a dome, and struggled last year with Cincinatti making the switch from American to National and dome to outdoor. Lohse’s ERA naturally decreased facing new hitters that had never faced him before, and getting to face the pitcher instead of a DH, but opponents hit .313 off of him at the Great American Ballpark. His one outing vs. the Cubs was 3 IP, 7 hits, 6 runs scored and 2 HR’s.

With the addition of Soriano to this lineup, Cliff Floyd, a healthy Derek Lee, and a red hot Ramirez - Lohse will struggle today going up vs. a veteran pitcher, veteran coach, and a veteran lineup in it’s prime. Meanwhile, although Marquis hasn’t been lights out vs. this Reds lineup, he has absolutely dominated Adam Dunn in 32 career At-Bats, only 4 hits, and that puts a big hole in the Reds lineup in the 3 spot.

Reds used 4 bullpen pitchers yesterday, while the Cubs used 2.

1* Braves/Phillies over 10 +105

Couple of extra inning games should take a toll on these bullpens in this game 3.

Look for Chucky James to suffer a sophomore slump this season. Soft tossing lefties are much easier to hit the more you see them, and he won't find as much success this year on the bump. He can't go after hitters and attack because of his lack of velocity, and his nibbling of the corners will lead to some walks. Hits and walks should set the table for the Phillies in most innings. If he gives in to Burrell and Howard, they will make him pay. Teams don't like getting swept at home, and the Phillies will battle in this game to avoid embarassment.

Adam Eaton is in a bad place right now. Injuries, a poor spring training, and he’s not that good to begin with. Phillies at home, trying to avoid the sweep have some big bats in their lineup that James will have a problem getting through. He makes his opening start of the season on the road, with the pressure of maintaining the Brave winning ways and go for the sweep.

Braves have a few good bats in their lineup that have been held in check this series, and after scoring some runs in extra innings, they carry that momentum over to this game, and plate a few runs early and set the tone off a hittable Eaton, not at his best right now.

0-1 today as the Cubbies lost a tight one.

2* Washington Nationals +106
1* over 9 +115

I don't like making a habit out of betting on teams that I don't think will fare well this season, but there is a lot to like about the Nationals in this spot.

For one, Arizona is fresh off an ass-kicking in Colorado, and traveled cross-country last night to head over to Washington. Arizona was 5-10 in the first half of last year in road series openers, and you would think that number is even worse the further they get from home.

Washington, meanwhile, is fresh off avoiding a sweep from the upstart Marlins who came in swigning red hot bats. Washington battled in the final game, racking up 16 hits and leaving the Marlins on the field with a 3-spot in the bottom half to end the game. That emotion should carry over to a brand new series tonight, as Washington has the momentum to carry that over to a new series and get a fresh start.

Washington also holds a slight pitching edge in this game between two young guys trying to hold their spots in the rotation. Bergmann didn't have a good spring, but he is a pitcher that has a big 6'4" 220 frame and creates a good downward plane on hitters off the bump. He has struggled early in his career, like his counterpart tonight, but his ERA is almost a full point better at home, and respectable in the 3's. He started twice vs. the Nationals last year, so has some good experience starting in the bigs vs. this team, which is more than I can say for his counterpart. He'll have the comfort of pitching at home tonight.

Edgar Gonzalez is another young pitcher trying to find himself. He has been a reliever most of last year, where he did not fare well, and now he has moved into a starting role, where he has not fared well....and I wonder what his experience and stamina will be like as a starter on top of it all. He'll make his 1st start on the road, with minimal starting experience, vs. a Nationals team that picked up some confidence with a big win last night over the Marlins.

Look for Washington to get to the bullpen early, and for it to fall apart quickly for the D-Backs again, who are running thin on bullpen already.

so much for the sophomore slump for James thus far, but that over hit nice in the 9th for you, good work big man.

Def no soph. slump in this game. But it's only 1. I don't think he can maintain this ERA, otherwise he is truly special - ala Glavine. I'm not a believer yet.

As for the over, they had the final 3 innings to get one run. Made me sweat it out, but better late than never. :toast:

I am with you on the Nationals. Got it at +115.

Typically, you will be able to get better lines than what I post.

Sometimes I play my games on the overnight, but don't post until next day because I don't feel like it. Sometimes, I post, but don't play it until later in the day.

When I post, I always post the line available at the time of my posting. Me playing an overnight at -105, doesn't help the casual visitor to this site when he goes to make his play an hour before gametime and the line is -134. I don't mind if my grading suffers, as long as you get the general idea of how I am doing this season by reading my YTD.

Good luck

I took two dumps a little over an hour apart earlier today.

GO NATS!

Now that's impressive. I typically get newspapers, magazines, nutrition labels, shampoo bottles, anything to read while I drop my deuces because I make sure I get it ALL out. I don't want any stragglers sneaking up on my later in the day.

So while you dropped two, numero dos's....I was still riding pine and my butt cheeks were tingling from sitting so long....suffering from "bench-ass".

I hear ya. Typically, I'll take about a 30 minute dump, but this was a special circumstance. I woke up at 3:30 p.m., immediately took a shit, then picked up some mexican food, ate it, and took another one.

Then I jerked off before getting a shower and getting ready for work. Best hour of my life? Possibly.
