This was the 1976 Raiders schedule , ironically they only lost one game, but look at the schedule , they started the season with Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh, and then went on the road for 5 straight games...unheard by todays standards....and they only played 14 games then, so they played almost their entire rod schedule in succession....it didn't matter though they won all but one game....By the looks of the scores the raiders could have started that year 0-4.

| 1 | Pittsburgh Steelers | W | 31-28
| 2 | at Kansas City Chiefs | W | 24-21
| 3 | at Houston Oilers | W | 14-13
| 4 | at New England Patriots | L | 17-48
| 5 | at San Diego Chargers | W | 27-17
| 6 | at Denver Broncos | W | 17-10
| 7 | Green Bay Packers | W | 18-14
| 8 | Denver Broncos | W | 19- 6
| 9 | at Chicago Bears | W | 28-27
| 10 | Kansas City Chiefs | W | 21-10
| 11 | at Philadelphia Eagles | W | 26- 7
| 12 | Tampa Bay Buccaneers | W | 49-16
| 13 | Cincinnati Bengals | W | 35-20

Correct see my post above, I wasn't finished ...that is funny .

"Lets stick Pittsburgh on top then send them on the road for 5 " LOL

All I can think is they were planning for the possibilty that the A's would be home in the playoffs.

Patriots had them beat in the playoffs. That was the gameof the famous roughing the passer call on 4th down to Ray Hamilton of the pats in one of the worst calls in history by Ben Dreith. If you look at the replay today it is even worse. Painful. Pats were better and got robbed. Of course now that the Pats are good we will get no sympathy....but at that time being a little boy...it hurt.

I didn't write it at first when i posted the schedule, that was why you missed it...pretty crazy to say the least.

I checked every schedule and there were two other long road trips , both the NYJ and NYG started that year with 4 road games, no other teams had more than 3 .

I posted this in another thread today about Stingley...those Pats teams were damn good, they were the only team to beat Oakland that year and played them even at Oakland.

I would love to see the play again.

We were damn good but you know what. We were predicted great things for a few years and loaded but our Defense was not really super bowl quality...especially facing those Pitt and Raider teams. The offense was loaded and defense too with great players liek Steve Nelson, Mike Haynes, Fox, Hannah, Leon Gray etc etc. I did not see the play for years but saw it a few years ago and it was one bad call. Wow.

I saw the other thread. Stingley had a lot of talent and that was very sad. Tatem was vicious and never apologized or called him for many many years.

I was young Colts fan in the 70's so I did follow the Pats...the '77 season ended in controversy for New England and Baltimore was a big part of it.

The Colts 'mysteriously' lost the week before the final game, to Detroit in Baltimore on a very late blocked punt for a TD....that loss actually eliminated the Patriots who were involved in a 3 way battle with Miami and Baltimore and were cancelled out on the tiebreaker , even if they won the final game at Baltimore the next week they were out....I always wondered if the Colts threw that game .

Even the final game had a controversial fumble at the goal line by the Colts Bert Jones , it was clearly a fumble, the Colts were given the ball back and scored ....New England was screwed again....I guess really old Patriots fans might remember that.

Oh I vividly remember this. THe Colts did lose that game on purpose....or at least did not go all out. That was kind of a mistake though as the Pats dominated them and were furious at what happened but couldn't hold on. Sometimes easier to play loose and free once the pressure is off IF you still want to win. We had a big early lead and the roof fell in led by that fumble. I was over my uncles house and Jones was not close to being down. You got the facts right on. It sucked again. Also in this time frame the Pats had a great team as usual and Fairbanks announced he was leaving right at the end of the year before the playoffs....he actually left for a few days and they took him back...well in that first playoff game against Houston we were so flat and lost decisively. I think it might have been 78 but sketchy on the year. Fairbanks decision and soap opera again hurt the Pats badly and another end of year fiasco. The Pats were it seemed were jinxed for a long time.

With just one WC team making it back then, the crazy tiebreaker rules were always coming into play, even points scored was a big factor or could be....all these years later and we're talking about it, amazing.

The Colts went on to lose one of the all time classic playoff games to Oakland in OT 37-31 on Christmas eve in Baltimore.

Lots of very good AFC teams in the 70's, if Houston had a QB other than Pastorini, Campbell might have a ring
