I recently got some pain killers from the doc, and as I went to get the scrip filled I started wondering - what's to prevent someone from photcopying the scrip and getting it filled from another drug store? Stupid I know, but do these scrips get back to the doctor and you'd eventually get busted? Just wondering in case I get addicted.

I think when they fill the script they confirm this w/ the doctor...so if you have 2 pharamcies confirming there might be a problem...JMO

Common sense says that you're surely FAR from the first person to think of this & therefore they already have safeguards in place to prevent it. They have to IMO.

I think they only do it with stuff like Oxycontin, that has street value. If its something like a rash cream, no need.

people steal the doctors prescription pads easily enough also. I think the way to do it is use a lot of different doctors and pharmacies.

Some doctors are starting to use the whole wireless Palm Pilot thing to avoid situations like that and for convenience. They send it electronically and you just have to pick it up, no need for a slip.

I think Drs call the scrip in too. not sure though. I actually can't remember the last time I had a written prescription, usually just go to the pharmacy and pick them up via Dr call in.

Try Photo copying and see what happens, it is actually pretty funny....

Best way is to first fill the script and then call dr. and inform you lost it and then 2 days later tell the dr. that you were doing the dishes and you knocked them down the drain.

In my Province its all stored on a central computer system so Pharmacists can see what you are taking. Also the government has contracted out the computer service to a US company. The US company has a signed privacy agreement with the BC goverment which is sufficiently naive to believe that will prevent the US from spying on us.

I need to hang out at a bar with you some night. You have to have some seriously out of hand stories.

Hiya guys, you know i am always looking thru the threads, esp the medical ones....part of my job is actually filling scripts for pts, based on a policy of course. if a pt has had surgery within 3 mos they get an automatic refill of their script, if its been more than 3 mos or never had surgery then its researched further and approved by the doc. (this is just mindless backround talk).

first of all, this is all in NY state, i dont know other state laws.....

if you try to photocopy a script the pharmacist will laugh at you. (the word void is all over the place when you do that) and i sure you would be reported.

scripts are kept on file at the pharmacy and then if we have a question they will fax the docs office a copy, but never do we get them sent back.

the only time they call to confirm anything is if the scipt is ineligible (altho most scripts are computer generated now)

they will also call if a pt has brought in a script for same or similar narc from another doc!!! (smart abusers keep a log of where which scripts are going but every once in a while they slip and we can see whats been going on)

all controlled substances are subject to this kind of monitoring, not just the heavy stuff. (ie even darvocet or tylenol with codeine)

we cannot call in a script for more than a 5 day supply and have to send the hard copy in. so joe schmo cant call in a script cause they ask us other doc info that pts wont know.

we do have problem patients that try the excuses of losing a script and needing refills and oops they went down the sink. we may give u the benefit of the doubt once but after that no way (its all documented in the computer for every professional to read within the practice if someone keeps trying to get drugs. we dont accept a report that script were stolen until we see a police report. funny how many script suddenly are "found" after they find this out.

hope this annswers some of the questions out there about scripts.

Interesting stuff...Especially from Mrs. Cheater. I didn't know all this.
What's also interesting is that that explains why when you drop off a script, they say, 'you can pick it up in 15-20'. I always thought WTF, it takes you 15
to take pills and put it in a bottle? For some reason, that drove me f---- crazy.
Now I know why.
