I still cannot understand how anyone can bet this Game on anything other than figures, all this Pitcher this pitcher that. Toronto is a prime example, everyone has done their Job and can sit back and relax while the closer comes off the bench cold and proceeds to get hit for 3 and lose the Game.

if im betting toronto this season, im betting the full game long before im betting the first five innings.

give me one of the best lineups in the american league for 9 innings
... along with one of the top 5 closers in the game and ill take my chances every time (when they merit a play, of course)

I wouldn't say it is necessarily fickle, but I do find it interesting that most seem to place so much of their decision on the starting pitcher particularly at the start of the year. This is not college or little league where the pitching is often the dominating factor. This is the major leagues and it is still a team sport which means hitting, defense, speed on the bases, style of play, bullpen, how the team is currently performing and a host of other factors should be considered. But in most write-ups I see, the selection is 90% based on starting pitching. Overweighted in my opinion.

WALLOP, another closer drops his pants, this time Balti. How fucking stupid are the geezers who run this game. :missingte Its the equivailent in Cricket of holding back your best bowler for the last over and he gets hit for 16, never happened in the history, why? because the British have got Brains, not some Dopey coach sending in another Dope he's kept all game just to stop any runs in the last. Unreal :missingte tune in later for another. :drink:

Winnie, not to destroy your argument entirely but you failed to point out that in cricket once there are 6 men out you're pretty much down to the dregs in batsmen. In baseball however the top hitters keep coming around through the rotation for another crack at the pitcher.

So the early and late stages of the two games are completely different.

Also bowling and pitching are completely different acts. Bowling involves a steady arm delivery while pitching whips the arm, stresses the shoulder and requires significant rest between pitching stints for starters. OTOH even fast bowlers can play day after day and starting bowlers can be used to mop up the bottom of an innings.

Even the stats won't tell you when a closer is going to come in cold so I'm with TTinCO, if you like the starting pitching match up play the first half.

I've never seen it played in the U.S in any sort of organized fashion. Pop over to Central Park on a Sunday morning in the summer though and you a whole bunch of brown people swinging the bat.

Woody,
Your usually more clued up :suomi:but have a look at the speeds of Pitchers and bowlers and watch that nutcase Mirlinda of Sri Lanka and talk about whipping the Arm. While the Game may be different, the end of the game requires the same result, stop the other side from winning. Anyway I thought it was all worked out with walks and the like so the closer pitches to the Tail end of the Order. ( Cricket Term):drink:

O.K. next question. is it ever broadcast on the satellite? never seen the game except the occasional highlight, players seem well dressed and mild mannered imo. do they have a "manager" to run out and argue with the umpires, hell do they even have umpires?

the three soccer channels in the US (FSC, Gol and Setanta) show it periodically but not very often.
