SEASON RECORD: 2-0-0 +2.0 Units

The Cubs came through with a 9-3 victory last night to put us up 2 Units on the season. Todays card was filled with a number of day games, something I’m not particularly fond of! Nevertheless, the runner-up game for was definitely the Washington Nationals against Brandon Webb. While I do feel John Patterson will be able to hold his own today, I don’t think it’s necessary to play on the worst team in the league against B-Webb this early in the season.

PLAY ON: NEW YORK YANKEES ( RUNLINE -1.5, +100) To Win 1 Unit

Today will be one of the few times we play on the New York Yankees. I don’t like to play on Runlines (The MLB run-spread) very often, but this spot was just too juicy. I will never play on a line above -150, so we will be pulling for the Yankees to win by at least two runs today.

The Yankees got embarrassed last night, losing to the lowly Adam Loewen and the O’s with Mike Mussina on the mound. Starting off a Yankee season at 1-2 against sub-.500 teams is certainly not what George Steinbrenner is looking for, no less the Yankee players. With minimal injuries to the offense, the Yankees have flat-out underachieved thus far, and are definitely hungry for a blowout today. Coming off of two losses, they face the pointy-eared Steve Trachsel; a veteran, crafty pitcher who deserves the Yankees respect after a 15-8 season, with a 3.58 ERA against the Yankees in 9 starts.

Despite Trachsels notoriety throughout the league, he has steadily declined, performance wise, over the past 3 years. While his win total on the Mets was impressive, his 4.97 ERA was less than satisfactory. Trachsel tends to walk a lot of hitters, and definitely relies on finesse more than power. Most appealing to me today was the fact that Trachsel has given up over 1 hit per inning over his past 5 seasons. Against the most explosive offensive offense in baseball, Trachsel should get hit like a piñata at A-Rods 8th birthday party.

The mystery man today is personified by none other than Kei Igawa, the Yankees newest $26 Million Japanese acquisition. Kei had a number of impressive years in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Japan, and is thankfully used to the pressure of the public eye. In New York, he has actually evaded much of the media attention thus far. At 27 years old, Igawa is far from a rookie. He is a southpaw who knows how to pitch, and has the composure of a level-headed, experienced pitcher. He has a good variety of off-speed pitches that he mixes in extremely well with a snappy fastball. This spring, he also showed the ability to pitch up in the zone without getting hammered. In fact, Igawa reminds me a lot of Ted Lilly—a pitcher I would have no problem playing on in this spot.

Igawa will walk some batters, but the Orioles have historically had trouble cashing in on these run-scoring opportunities. The Orioles scored a mere 4.6 Runs Per Game against Lefty’s last season, and were 5-21 on the season against them. Veteran hitter Jay Payton is injured for the O’s, and without significantly productive years from Brian Roberts or Melvin Mora, this team will struggle on the season.

The Yankees are the Yankees. They should be able to motor to the Orioles scrappy bullpen by the 4th inning, and if Trachsel puts some men on base via the Walk, we should see some major runs scored early. This Yankee offense wants a successful outing for Igawa as much as we do, so I also expect them to employ the additional focus and discipline for that to happen. If Igawa can avoid a complete meltdown, the Yanks should cash this one with flying colors.
