In a big game Mo then Jenks...

In a regular game give me Papelbon...

Papelbon pitches whenever...

A great example of a guy who would suck in middle relief is Bobby Jenks. He can't get anyone out when it isn't a save situation or a huge game...

based on history and performance when it counts, you can't go against Mariano. He's who I'd want. But I'm a big Papelbon follower, he'd be right behind Mariano.

Didn't Ryan just blow a save last week? Oh yes he did cause he cost me money.

Trevor Hoffman. His stuff isn't great, but he doesn't typically even make you sweat.

agreed, he's been doing it for so long and so damn consistent. I believe he has the highest save percentage in baseball history? Not quite sure

I don't know about Papelbon, i want to see him do it for a few more years...

Yup they're the top two closers in the game IMO..

Papelbon has great stuff...but remember how dominant Lidge and especially Gagne were? look at them now...

Gagne man...if you would have told me he'd pretty much be done 2 years later I would have never believed it

But that is how it is with any closer. It depends on the situation you are talking though. On an everyday basis Papelbon may be the best in the game or Hoffman.

But as I said in the playoffs and in a huge game it is a different story. You can't be considered the best as a closer until you have succeeded in those games. I would take Jenks and Mo over anyone in the huge games. Hoffman would be a close third though because he has gotten it done there as well.

Lee Smith for me.

Lee Smith was a great one BUT he was not great for the Red Sox when he pitched for us. AN all time great pitcher who did not pitch like that for the Sox when he pitched here for a couple of years. Lee SMith was HUGE physically at 6"6 265. A monster. I always wanted to see someone charge the mound on him but it never happened in my recollection.

Eckersley was unreal for a while but Mariano has done it for a lot longer. Rivera is the king of closers.

Hoffman is such a freaking pro out there. What stones he has to throw an 85 mph fastball (at best) and a change and is an artist! Hoffman needs to be a first ballot HOFer. He never walks people or beats himself. If you beat him, you beat him, but it RARELY happens
