My guess would be either Sheffield, Thome, or The Big Hurt (Frank Thomas). I know all 3 of those guys were relatively close because I had a similar conversation with a friend before the season started.

A friend and I had a discussion about home runs right before the season started so I remember all 3 of those guys being close. I think they were the top 3 active players that hadn't reached 500. If I'm not mistaken, Frank Thomas had the most.

Yea...we were pretty shocked too. I just looked it up to verify now and I was wrong about them being the top 3. Here are the top active HR leaders that have not reached 500:
