2007 RECORD: <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:date Year="2000" Day="1" Month="3">3-1-0</st1:date> +1.8 Units

Tough game in Houston yesterday. I clearly made a mistake on the Astros mindset coming into that game, as they were held to 1 hit by Kip Wells. Today should get us back on track. I have a really strong lean today on Colorado Rockies +140. While the spot for Colorado looks particularly solid, they are simply too overmatched in all areas for me to play on them. I will be watching this one closely. On to today:
<st1:date Year="2007" Day="9" Month="4">4/9/2007</st1:date> Milwaukee Brewers (Jeff Suppan) @ Florida Marlins (Anibal Sanchez) 7:05PM ET

PLAY ON: FLORIDA MARLINS (MoneyLine, -115) To Win 1 Unit

Today I have zero discrepancies in judging team mindset. The Florida Marlins are a hungry, young team that is once again proving that anything is possible. When I look at this team, I see a bunch of nobodies. Yet, they managed to make a remarkable comeback towards legitimacy last year, and have started off this season with a respectable 4-2 record. After two wins where they scored an average of 7 runs per game, they face the highly publicized, highly paid, and highly touted Jeff Suppan. The pesky Marlins know they will have to bear down tonight in order to win this game, and that’s exactly what they’ll do.

From a talent standpoint, Suppan is definitely an interesting specimen. Remarkably, he has been able to keep his ERA around 4.10 for the past four years. On that same token, however, is the fact that Suppan has been blessed with a Cardinals uniform. He has been able to hide behind pitchers like Chris Carpenter, the former Woody Williams, Mark Mulder, etc… These Cardinals pitchers took the brunt of opponent beatings, while Suppan was able to fly under the radar every single year, putting up impressive numbers with marginal “stuff.” After a solid post-season last year, Suppan was moved on a big contract to Milwaukee, where he will attempt to share the role of “ace” with Ben Sheets. In my mind, however, Suppan is hardly an ace. To quote a good friend, “He leaves runners on the corners every inning and somehow gets out of it with a popup.” Suppan’s WHIP (Walks/Hits per Inning Pitched) has been steadily rising over the past four years as he apparently seems to gamble more and more with the opposing hitters. While he is crafty, his natural talent level will never elevate him to ace status, and Suppan will always have the potential to get knocked up by even the worst teams in the league.

The Brewers come into this game off of a blowout victory over Wade Miller and the division rival Cubs. Wade Miller is a highly touted pitcher with quality stuff, but the Brewers were prepared for it. Now, after a decisive victory, they come into the converted football stadium of the lowly Florida Marlins to face Anibal Sanchez, a virtual unknown with a current ERA of 6.35. What many people don’t know about Sanchez is that he flaunted a 2.89 ERA last season over 17 starts, and pitched the only no-hitter of the season at home. Sanchez is still well under the radar, and the Brewers will definitely overlook this guy today.

I watched a lot of tape of Sanchez last night, particularly his opening start against Washington. What I can tell you is that his stuff is impressive—nothing like Kei Igawa. Towards the end of last year, he was practically unhittable, and showed some nasty ability. During the most recent start against the Nationals, he had only given up 1 run through 5 2/3rds innings. His other 3 earned runs came after a bloop hit by Dmitri Young that should have been out #3. I consider this start an anomale, and a nonchalant outing. Sanchez should end the year with an ERA no higher than 4.00 and could very well end up as an ace for this Marlins staff over the long term. I am very doubtful of this Brewers lineup with such young players, and don’t think Sanchez will have any trouble bearing down against Jeff Suppan tonight.

Both offenses are pretty evenly matched. The Marlins don’t have Hanley Ramirez tonight, but have been swinging a very hot bat so I don’t expect that to have any major influence.

So without further ado, lets get this train back on track tonight.
