Aaron doesn't plan to celebrate if Bonds breaks record

April 10, 2007

ATLANTA (AP) -- Hank Aaron doesn't plan to be at the ballpark if and when Barry Bonds breaks his home run record.
"Uh-uh. No, no. I'm not going to be around," Aaron was quoted as saying in Tuesday's editions of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Bonds has 735 homers, 20 short of Aaron's career record. While Aaron has declined most interview requests in recent months, he spoke with Journal-Constitution columnist Terence Moore.
Aaron said he wouldn't attend if Bonds were within reach of the record when the San Francisco Giants play at Atlanta from Aug. 14-16.

"I'd probably fly to West Palm Beach to play golf," Aaron was quoted as saying in Moore's column. "Again, it has nothing to do with anybody, other than I had enough of it. I don't want to be around that sort of thing anymore. I just want to be at peace with myself. I don't want to answer questions. It's going to be a no-win situation for me anyway. If I go, people are going to say, `Well, he went because of this.' If I don't go, they'll say whatever. I'll just let them make their own mind up."

Aaron, who did not return a call from The Associated Press, said baseball commissioner Bud Selig has told him that Bonds has asked several times why Aaron hasn't contacted him as he approaches the record. "I don't talk to anybody, really, and I've never talked to Barry, outside of that commercial we did together a few years ago, and a few other short times," Aaron was quoted as saying. "I'm 72 years old, and I'm not hopping on a plane and flying all the way to San Francisco for anybody."

Hmmmmm.

I'm not surprised....I think back to Maris' family following McGwire and Sosa around in what turned out to be a juiced up science project gone bad...

I wonder what they think of Big Mac breaking his record now?

Good for him. No need to acknowledge a cheater, even if it's a milestone.

Lots of people will miss Aaron's non-presence. Particularly if Barry is threatening to break the record in Atlanta, this will be a pretty big story; if I'm not mistaken it's rather customary to have a record-holder (if alive) on hand to "hand over" in some sense a record to the new record-holder once it's broken.

It's a pretty definite statement on Aaron's part.

It seems like Bonds and Aaron are too very bitter people who could never handle their own success.

They both deserve each other and baseball will be better off when AROD breaks both their records and we have someone that is alot more personable and open. for all AROD is, he isn't bitter and always talks to the press.

Didn't you say that Barry would never break the record?

Yep! Sure did. The way the Giants line-up is set, there is no protection for Barry. First 7 games the Giants are 1-6 scoring a league low 14 runs. If Barry doesn't get his home runs early this year and it gets to August or September, it wouldn't surprise me if manager's decide not to pitch to him unless they have too. Never expected Barry to come back after sitting out for so long. Doesn't matter. A-Rod is likely to surpass whatever he does anyway.

Good for Hank, I don't blame him a bit. It might be the first time in Barry's life he was told no.

You mean Ray Durham isn't scaring teams into pitching to Barry? :ohno:

I have season tickets again this season and doubt I go to more than 5 games this season (mainly due to other obligations). I am so disgusted with what they did this off season I can't even put it into words.

So are you saying that he won't break the record?
