No, not even close tbh. He was a good shortstop, what 2-3 gold gloves? Problem is he didn't have enough GREAT years. He won MVP one year, but he was too injured and played 150 games only 4x in 19 seasons.

He's not even a career .300 hitter, he was good - don't get me wrong but definitly not HOF.

He's like a Mattingly or Rice.

Very, very close. I think that MVP campaign coule very well be the one that puts him just over the top.

i count 21 HOF shortstops and only 6 have a career avg of over .300

Larkins career avg is .295....his hits, stolen bases, runs scored, OBP, and

RBI...look as good or better than the other HOF shortstops

was the reason he didnt have a bunch of gold gloves cuz Ozzie was in front of him? Was Larkin usually 2nd in that regard? He was the best hitting SS of his era wasnt he? best hitting ss and one of the best fielders, longevity, staying with the reds for all those years, I think he has a decent case

You can't compare Larkins offensive #'s with HOF SS because most SS in the HOF don't have good #'s offensively.

Unfortunately Larkin was good defensively but not as good as other SS's at the beggening of his career, and good offensively but not nearly as good as offensive short stops near the end of his career.

He just didn't have that many HOF seasons. He compiled good #'s through almost 20 years of baseball and being nice or loyal to one team is a non-factor.

Postseason wise is also a non-factor as he only got their 2x in 20 years, so that doesn't help his case much.

No they're not.

Ryne is arguably the best 2nd baseman in history. 9 straight gold gloves and 10 MVP's, and the best all-time fielding percentage for 2nd base.

He was a shoe in. Larkin came close but never reached 200 HR or 1000 RBI's, yes the #'s mean something. Ryne was 282 and 1060. He also had many more individual better years than Larkin.

Can't compare the two.

I think Trammell gets in before Larkin and that may be a stretch.

THIS ONE WILL BE REAL INTERESTING, I DON'T THINK HE MAKES IT THOUGH.

You could compare him to Alan Trammell and pretty much realize that he won't come close....I think he was a slightly better player than Trammell , but only slightly....I'm surprised Trammell got so few votes actually, I think Larkin gets more votes but not nearly enough.

I think it will be very very close if Larkin makes it.

Here's the thing....

We all know Larkin clearly has numbers that favor him over many of the baseball HOF shortstops, I think voters compare how he did against his era more than comparing him to say a guy like Joe Tinker (who is in the HOF) or Phil Rizzuto who happened to play on many WS teams with the NYY.

I don't think he makes it just by coimparing him to what happened with a very comparable player like Alan Trammell.

He must have meant 10 AS games....the comparison to Sandberg is a pretty good one IMO....I think he falls above Trammell but below Sandberg, right in that area.

The shortstops of yesteryear, and even of only 10-15 years ago, suffer from comparisons to today's SS's who put up large offensive numbers. Another bad side effect of the juiced era.
