Home sweet home? Postseason plays and stay-aways

Wed, Apr 18, 2007

By Tim Roberts

The NBA playoffs are upon us and while the first-round matchups aren’t all set at the time of writing, that won’t stop us from talking about teams’ chances for home-court success.
We know which teams will open up at home, but since everyone plays at home at least once in the playoffs, we'll include all postseason contenders (no matter how unlikely they are to advance).
Besides, for people like us it’s not so much about the winning or the losing – it’s more about the line and who’ll cover it.
Top 5 plays at home
1. San Antonio Spurs For a powerhouse, the Spurs were a shaky play at the AT&T Center before Christmas.
That’s all changed. San Antonio went 15-1 straight up (SU) and 11-5 against the spread (ATS) at home in the second half. Both marks top the league among playoff-bound teams.
2. Cleveland Cavaliers The Cavaliers turned it on in the second half, kind of like their superstar LeBron James. Cleveland went 9-4 both SU and ATS at Quicken Loans Arena after the All-Star Game.
Note, however, that the Cavs dropped a recent home game to the Miami Heat, a potential first-round opponent.
3. Chicago Bulls The Bulls opened the season with a series of lopsided wins at the United Center and while they couldn’t maintain their margin of victory numbers all season, they still managed an 11-3 SU and 8-6 ATS home mark in the second half.
The Bulls’ came by their season-long 31-10 SU and 24-17 ATS marks honestly – ignore them at your own peril.
4. Golden State Warriors The Warriors could miss the playoffs and that would be a relief for the first-round opponent who avoids Oracle Arena.
Golden State’s 25-16 ATS mark at home is the best in the West and the Warriors won 11 of their 13 home games in a second-half rally towards the playoffs.
5. Phoenix Suns Phoenix cruised to a 33-8 SU record at US Airlines Center this season, but the hefty spreads they faced left their ATS record a mediocre 21-19-1.
The Suns’ 13-2 SU second half at home, however, suggests that they can turn it on when they want – and they’ll want to in Round 1.
Top 5 stay-aways at home
1. Washington Wizards NBA bettors know about the long-term injuries to Washington stars Gilbert Arenas and Caron Butler, but they might not realize how bad a play the Wizards are at the Verizon Center.
A refresher: their 13-25-3 ATS mark at home is the worst among playoff-bound teams, as is their 3-11-1 ATS record at home in the second half. They also have a six-game home losing streak and are 0-5-1 ATS over those games.
2. Los Angeles Lakers The only the reason the Lakers aren’t topping this list is because the Wizards are barely worse. Ignore L.A.’s 25-16 SU home record for the season – the Lakers covered the spread at home only twice in 14 games in the second half.
On the plus side, their poor form and inevitably powerful first-round opponent means they won’t be home favorites.
3. Utah Jazz The Jazz squandered home-court advantage for the first round. It’s likely for the best – Utah was 17-20-3 ATS at home this season and only 4-8-1 ATS in the second half at EnergySolutions Arena.
Maybe it’s because Salt Lake City offers visiting players so little in the way of post-game entertainment, meaning they have nothing to focus on but winning.
4. Houston Rockets Too funny. Houston stole home-court advantage from the Jazz, likely the last thing Rockets backers wanted to hear.
The Rockets were 15-25-1 ATS at Toyota Center this year, the worst mark among Western playoff teams. Their 5-10 ATS mark at home in the second half isn’t encouraging.
5. Detroit Pistons The Pistons’ home warning should come with an asterisk. They failed to cover a few spreads down the stretch after they’d all-but-clinched the Eastern Conference’s top seed and were resting veteran starters.
All the same, Detroit is a very public team, as their season-long 15-24-2 ATS mark at the Palace of Auburn Hills attests.

Don't know, but if you want a flyer on a long shot bet that has a shot, take GS to win the Dallas series.

GS is on fire right now (21-5 and 9-1 to end the season against the hardest schedule in the league over the last 26, opponent winning % = .556), 30-11 at home during the regular season and won 6 of 7 (could be 5 of 6) against Dallas.

They also match up pretty well with Dallas.

Mavs, I'm in love with this team

Something tells me I am not going to be the only one with this pick.

I am going to run w/ my home town Rockets...why not?? Some here say the NBA is scrtipted...what better script than McGrady and Yao holding the NBA trophy.

people who say the NBA is scripted just don't like the league. the only reason people bring that up is when they get bad beats on like a last shot. like it doesn't happen in other sports as well.

happened in baseball today as a matter of fact ask cleveland and toronto bettors what happened to them today. in the NBA anything can happen as with any sport.

I think only San Antonio or Dallas have a chance - it also looks like SA is a little better right now - they had Dallas beat until Duncan missed the 4th and then the game was tied under a minute - maybe the Heat if Wade plays like he did last year.

I'll say Dallas if they can eliminate GS in the first round. Really, GS is like the ABSOLUTE mismatch for the Dallas team. Thats going to be fun ... GS vs Dallas :aktion033 :aktion033

I agree 100%..love playoff basketball. Last year was so fun for me as a fan to watch Cuban and the Mavs lose to the Heat. I hate Dallas...

this looks like a pretty easy way to make a few bucks :

dallas 200/390
sant 100/460
phoe 100/430

if dallas wins : + 190
if sant wins : + 160
if phoe wins : + 130

dont see any other team winning than one of those 3

The NBA Playoffs actually allow people to make money on the league. You can forget about the regular season.
