Take PHI Phillies

The Phillies aren't as bad as they've played and they will score runs, as they are too talented offensively. Philadelphia goes with lefty Jamie Moyer who is happy to be out of the NL with a 3.55 ERA. Washington is 1-3 against lefties this season. Naturally it helps to have righty sluggers against southpaws, but the Nationals let their best righty slugger go this offseason (Soriano). The Nationals look like the worst team in baseball. Starter John Patterson, the "ace", is off a 1-win season because of injuries and doesn't appear on track, with a 7.07 ERA and an 0-2 record. He's walks 10 in 14 innings

Prediction: 'Over'
Almost any major league pitcher would be thrilled to have an ERA of 3.60. But for Johan Santana, the best pitcher in baseball and last year's AL Cy Young Award winner, these numbers are definitely disappointing. In fact, the last time Santana had a higher ERA for an entire season was way back in 2001. But Santana does have a habit of starting the season slowly as last year Santana went 1-3 with an ERA of 4.45 during the month of April. Santana's opponent on the mound will be another lefty, veteran Jarrod Washburn. The 'over' is 10-2 in Seattle's last 12 games as an underdog and 10-4 in the last 14 meetings between these two teams. In the last four games between these two teams, a total of 51 runs were scored, or an average of almost 13 runs per game.

Take the 'over'.

Dave Cokin

MLB for 04/19/2007

Rangers at White Sox
Prediction: Rangers
I'm going against the current pitching form here, as Javier Vazquez clearly has it going better than Vicente Padilla right now. But grabbing solid underdog odds and playing against a home favorite that just celebrated a no-hit win is worth the shot. While the White Sox were living it up off Mark Buehrle's amazing gem, the Rangers were licking their wounds and should come out ready to atone for the no-hit embarrassment.

Scott Spreitzer's MLB Tailor-Made Beatdown GOW! -- 2-0 in 2007!
I'm laying the price with the Reds on Thursday. Woody Williams is struggling out of the gate in 2007. The 40-year old is 0-2 with a 5.63 ERA in three starts, finding out that he may be nearing the end of his career now that he's throwing outside of Petco. The righty has been smacked for a lifetime 5.34 ERA in 19 starts against the Reds and he's 0-2 in his last five tries against the Reds with an 8.38 ERA. In three starts at Great American, Williams has been tagged for 15 ER and 21 hits in just 18 IP. That adds up to a hefty 7.50 ERA! I expect Bronson Arroyo to get his first win tonight. The righty owns a 3.48 ERA in three starts, but has yet to find the win column. This will be his second start at home in 2007. He came into the season with 17 starts under hit belt at Great American, with a fantastic, 2.60 ERA & 1.06 WHIP. Arroyo also owns a 3.70 ERA in his last 67 appearances (63 starts) under the lights. Now, toss in Griffey Jr's domination against Williams and you can see why this is a Tailor Made Beatdown GOW. The Reds grab the win on Thursday. Thanks! GL! Scott.

Some additional info on Cinn game tonight...
Cincinatti is a solid 13-5 its last 18 home games when Arroyo is the starter....Reds are also 8-1 against right handed starters this season......Houston is just 3-5 its last 8 games against division rivals

Michael Cannon's Money Train

15 Dime –

PHILLIES (With Moyer and Patterson as listed pitchers)

Take the Phillies today as the small road chalk for the win over the Nationals.

Philadelphia sends the ageless wonder, Jamie Moyer, to the hill and I expect him to hold the Nationals in check. Moyer is a junkball pitcher who gets a lot of flyballs, but it should work to his advantage pitching in cavernous RFK Stadium.

The Nats will counter with John Patterson and the right-hander has struggled to keep people off the basepaths so far this year. Patterson has allowed 13 hits and issued 10 walks in only 14 innings so far while striking out just seven batters.

The Phillies have disappointed so far this year but facing Patterson could be the spark this lineup needs. Putting runners on in front of Ryan Howard is a dangerous thing to do and the reigning NL MVP could be in for a big afternoon.

Lay the juice with the Phillies as they grab the afternoon win over the Nationals.

10 Dime –

REDS (With Williams and Arroyo as listed pitchers)

Take the Reds for the home win tonight over the Astros.

Bronson Arroyo gets the nod for Cincinnati and he’s still looking for win No. 1 on the year.

He’s going to get it tonight.

Even though Arroyo is 0-2 through three starts, he’s posted a respectable 3.48 ERA.

It’s only a matter of time before the Reds lineup starts piling up the runs for the Cincinnati right-hander and it wouldn’t surprise me if they did so in a big way tonight against Woody Williams.

Williams is also 0-2 on the year through three starts, but he has a 5.63 ERA and has allowed 22 hits in only 16 innings. For his career he has a 5.34 ERA against Cincinnati in 19 games.

Take the Reds tonight and lay the juice as Arroyo grabs win No. 1 on the year.

5 Dime –

DIAMONDBACKS (With Hernandez as listed pitcher)

Take Arizona at a nice plus return over the Padres today behind Livan Hernandez.

This price is way too inflated with Jake Peavy pitching at home for the Padres. While Peavy is having a sensational start this season, Hernandez isn’t pitching too bad himself.

The Arizona right-hander is 1-0 through three starts with a 1.80 ERA. He’s had some control issues, but he should iron it out today against a team he’s had great success against through his career.

Hernandez is 9-2 with a 3.38 ERA in 17 games against San Diego.

Peavy, on the other hand, is only 7-8 with a 5.49 ERA in 17 career games against the Diamondbacks.

Take Arizona at a very nice return for the road win today over San Diego.

Larry Ness' 15* Getaway Day GOW (14-1 to open '07 with 15* GOW plays!)
My 15* play is on the SF Giants at 3:35 ET. I'm not sure why the Cards are the small favorite in this game? After last night's 6-5 loss in 12 innings, they are 6-8 on the year, the worst start of any defending champ since the Marlins opened 1-11 in 1998 (team basically disbanded after winning in '97). Kip Wells goes for St Louis and the nine-year vet who signed a one-year, $4 million deal as a free agent in the off-season, entered the 2007 season with a 57-75 (4.46) career mark. He made just nine starts last year, with his teams going 3-1 at home (5.59 ERA) and 1-4 on the road (7.20 ERA). Over the past three seasons in 35 road starts, his teams are 11-24 with Wells posting a 5.51 ERA. So pardon me if a I don't get too excited over his 2.25 ERA in three starts to open this year for the Cards. The Giants' Noah Lowry has pitched well in two starts this year (2.77) but the Giants have lost both games. He has been a solid pitcher at home though, in his brief career. Last year's numbers showed a 3.61 ERA at home in 16 starts (team was just 8-8) and a road ERA of 6.79 (team was 3-8). Since '04, he entered this season with the Giants 24-17 in his 41 home starts (3.28 ERA) and 15-18 in 33 road starts (5.21 ERA). In his lone home start this year, he allowed just six hits and one ER in seven innings of a 2-1 loss (no decision) to the Dodgers. He's a lefty and the Cards were abysmal against lefties last year, going 23-34 (9-18 on the road). Playing on them during LY's regular season when facing a lefty at $100/game, one would have lost over $2,500! The Cards are 3-3 vs lefties this year but note in the three wins, they've scored a total of just 10 runs (3.33 RPG). That goes nicely with the team's total lack of run production this year, as with Pujols batting just .200 (just four HRs after hitting a ML-record 14 in April in 2006), the Cards are averaging just 3.29 RPG through their first 14 games. Getaway Day GOW 15* SF Giants.

Big Al's NL Total of the Month -- EARLY START!

At 1:05 pm, our NL Total of the Month is on the Philadelphia Phillies and Washington Nationals 'under' the total. It may be no surprise that after 15 games the Washington Nationals have a 5-10 record. What may be surprising, however, is that the Phillies are 3-10 and at the bottom of the NL East, below even the lowly Nats. Nothing seems to be going right for Philadelphia as its hitting has been sporadic at best and its pitching, especially its bullpen, has been horrific. In fact, the Phillies team ERA of 5.55 is the worst in the National League. Jamie Moyer, the crafty lefthander and arguably the Phillies best starter, will go in this one, and the fact that the Nats are only hitting .203 against southpaws, does not bode well for the home team. But Nats' ace John Patterson will oppose Moyer on the hill for Washington, and although Patterson has an ERA over 7 runs, he is a very talented pitcher who had a very good start his last time out . Nine of the Nats' last 11 games have gone a total of 8 runs or less. Take the 'under'. As always, good luck...Al McMordie

Game: Philadelphia Phillies at Washington Nationals Apr 19 2007 1:05PM
Prediction: Washington Nationals
Reason: Yesterday, the Phillies took an early lead, but the Nationals battled back to win 5-4. Philadelphia has been a money-burner after blowing a lead, going 14-22 as a favorite when seeking immediate revenge for a loss in which they held the lead. Fittingly, the Nationals are an impressive 22-7 at home when they are off a win in which they came back from a deficit and it is not the first game of a series, banking 15.5 units.
In Patterson’s last start, he battled the Mets, but lost 3-2. We look for the Nats to pick him up here, as Washington is 25-18 AS A DOG when they lost by one run in their starter's last start. Washington and the 120 is the way to go here.

Minnesota +1.71 over ANAHEIM PINNACLE

This Ducks have a 3-1 series lead but this series has been so close that it could just as easily be tied 2-2 or even 3-1 in the Wilds’ favor. There’s no doubt the Ducks are a threat to win it all and they’re especially tough in their own rink, however, the Wild has skated with them every step of the way and played just as good. This was an unfortunate match-up for Minnesota, as they’re still as sound as any team left and could have gone a long way had they not drawn the Ducks. Still, they’re not dead yet and that last game in Minnesota had to give them a huge boost in the arm, as they were dominant and the 4-1 final could have been worse. Big tag on the Wild definitely has us leaning that way. Overlay. Play Minnesota +1.71 (Risking 2 units).

CALGARY +1.21 over Detroit

Personally, we’re not betting this game because we stepped in on Calgary for the series before the last game and need a win here. However, had you not joined us in that wager we would recommend playing the Flames again tonight. If Calgary can get in their heads to just keep shooting the puck they’ll score some goals because Domenic Hasek is even worse then we first thought. He allowed two soft goals last game and was out of position and vulnerable on about 10 other chances. We’re just praying that Hasek gets the call again tonight because at some point during these playoffs, Osgood is going to be called upon. The Flames at least showed some heart last game although we’re still convinced that they haven’t come close to playing their best. Detroit is playing well and they could definitely win here but they can’t win if the Flames keep blasting away at the net. Play Calgary (No bets).

Locksmith aka "Land of No Juice"

He had a very bad day yesterday but said he is going to bounce back today. When I saw that the Locksmith had the Dodgers last night I called my local and cancelled that wager. I feel bad for his followers because he does not maintain a YTD record with units and he also does not include vig. Fade the underground handicapping legend.

Chicago Cubs -115

The Chicago Cubs have been in a bit of a free fall going 3-7 in their last ten games, but Rich Hill has been one of the major bright sports for the Cubs since the start of the season. Hill is 2-0 with a 0.64 ERA. He’s barely allowing any hits when he has gone out their the past two games. He allowed just three singles in seven scoreless innings last Saturday against the Reds and he only gave up only a solo homer in seven innings in his win against Milwaukee. Mark Redman gets the call tonight for the Braves and he is off to a horrible start with a 12.96 ERA and a WHIP of 2.16. This is a great matchup for the Cubs to take advantage of today and I have no problem laying a little chalk with the much better pitcher. Take the Cubs. Recommendation: Chicago Cubs

Teddy Covers

LA Dodgers @ Colorado Rockies

The Dodgers gave Jeff Kent and Luis Gonzales the day off yesterday. Both should be back in the lineup today, and both have an extraordinary track record of success against Colorado starter Aaron Cook. Kent is batting .529 with one homer and five RBI’s in 17 at bats against Cook, while Gonzales has hit .357 with four doubles, two homers and seven RBI’s against the Rockies sinkerballer. Juan Pierre is starting to get hot at the top of the order for LA, with six hits in his last three games. The Dodger lineup hammered Cook repeatedly last year, putting up 33 hits and 20 runs in four games against him. There’s no reason to think that LA won’t have similar success today.

But Colorado is hitting the ball fairly well themselves, averaging 5.5 runs scored per game at Coors Field this year. They were able to tee off against Derrick Lowe last night, knocking him out of the box in the fifth inning. It should be even easier for the Rockies potent lineup today facing emergency starter Mark Hendrickson, filling in for the injured Jason Schmidt. Hendrickson has never started a game at Coors, and he’s been unable to last for any extended stretches in the Dodgers starting rotation. Look for the Rockies to trade runs with the Dodgers in daytime baseball in Colorado this afternoon, sending this game flying Over the total.

Today's featured race is the Forerunner
Thursday, April 19, 2007

1ST

DUGAN had a rough trip in his 3 year old debut but should move forward off of that start. He will be running at the end and rates the edge in the opener. JEDOUM has been idle since September when he was a distant third behind Nobiz Like Showbiz. He has trained well for his return and is a contender. MANHASSET INDIAN has been beaten at short odds in his last four races and will probably be overbet again today.

2nd

THORN SONG just missed last out behind a repeat winner. Romans figures to have him ready for his return to Ky. and he appears to be in a good spot to get his maiden win under Gomez. MANTLE was beaten as the 3-5 favorite in his last race but a return to his previous form would make him tough to handle. THE CUBAN HAWK has a chance.

3rd

ACADIA BREEZE broke through the gate prior to the start of the Bourbonette and then stopped badly after setting the pace. She figures to be come from off of the pace today and rates the slight edge for Romans and Guidry. FANLIGHT FANNY shortens up for this one and looks like a contender at decent odds. TALETOBETOLD is a definite threat in a wide open allowance test.

4th

CONSECRATION finished second in both of his races back in July and has trained well for his return. McGaughey is very solid with returning runners and this one rates the slight edge over Arc Light in a close call. ARC LIGHT also makes his 3 year old debut off of a series of good works. He just missed in his last race at Churchill and a repeat of that performance will make him tough to beat. DAAHER is a first timer in the capable hands of Kiaran McLaughlin.

5th

MAGICAL RIDE was no match for a runaway winner at Gulfstream but was clearly second best in that one. She should move forward off of that start and looks like a good bet to win this one for Arnold and Prado. BOLDLY SEDUCTIVE has been off since November but is training well for her comeback and could add value to the gimmicks. JERSEY BOND shortens up and will be running at the end.

6th

QUIET ROYAL didn’t show much when shipped to California for the Santa Ana but her lone start on the Keeneland turf was a third place finish in the Q.E. 2. Look for her to rebound with a win today. DANZON moves to the barn of Patrick Biancone and makes her 4 year old debut. She is definitely the one to beat. BEAUTIFUL DANIELLE beat the top pick at Gulfstream and has to be considered.

7th

CRYPTOQUIP was a graded stakes winner last year and has been training well for her 4 year old debut. She is the definite class of this one and Proctor is very good with returning runners. SKYWARD EXCHANGE comes off of a couple of dull efforts in New Orleans but has been training well since moving to the barn of Walter Bindner. She figures to run much better today. LA COCASSE is a contender.

8th

TRIMARAN has been very impressive in both of his wins on the turf. He broke his maiden easily and overcame a ton of trouble to win last out. Desormeaux picks up the mount for Bobby Frankel and he rates the edge in what looks like a very well matched renewal of the Forerunner. IN JEST was no match for Marcavelly in the Transylvania but has the benefit of a race over this turf course and will be running at the end. CORRUPT stopped badly as the odds on favorite last out but has rebounded with a bullet work and has to be considered. BLUES STREET has never run a

bad race and is a definite threat for Pletcher and Gomez.

9TH

DANTHEBLUEGRASSMAN drops to a career low claiming level and should get the win against this bunch. HATCH also drops in class and is the one to beat.

SANCTUARY’S OMOONI is a contender.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

N.Y. Mets (9-4) at Florida (6-7)
Orlando Hernandez (1-1, 4.00 ERA) looks to bounce back from an ugly start when he leads the streaking Mets against the slumping Marlins, who will hand the ball to rookie Rich Vanden Hurk (0-0, 3.86).
The Mets pounded Dontrelle Willis and Florida 9-2 last night. New York has won four of its last five overall and is 6-2 on the road this year. Going back to last September, the Mets are on a 12-4 roll on the highway. Meanwhile, the Marlins have dropped four in a row and six of their last seven, and they’re just 3-4 at Dolphin Stadium.
Hernandez’s first two starts came on the road at St. Louis and Atlanta, and he was sensational in both, allowing one run in each outing over a total of 13 innings. However, in his first appearance of the season at Shea Stadium on Saturday, El Duque got rocked for six earned runs on eight hits in five innings, losing 6-2 to the Nationals. For good measure, the righthander got ejected from the game after hitting a batter following a home run.
El Duque made one start against the Marlins last year, giving up three runs on five hits in five innings en route to a 7-3 road win. For his career, he’s 2-1 with a 5.19 ERA in three starts against the Fish.
Vanden Hurk, a native of Great Britain, was solid in his major-league debut against Milwaukee back on April 10, giving up a run on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts. He lasted just 4 2/3 innings because of rain. The righthander’s only other appearance came in relief at Atlanta on Sunday, and he got tagged for two runs on three hits in 2 1/3 innings, as Florida lost, 8-4.
The under is 8-1 in Hernandez’s last nine starts, including 3-0 this year and 4-1 in his last five on the road.
The over is 12-5 in the last 17 series meetings, including 8-1 in Florida. Also, the Marlins’ last nine divisional games have flown over the total.
ATS ADVANTAGE: N.Y. METS and OVER

Chicago Cubs (5-9) at Atlanta (10-4)
Cubs youngster Rich Hill (2-0, 0.64) looks to continue his incredible start to the 2007 season when he goes up against the Braves’ Mark Redman (0-2, 12.96) in a battle of lefthanders.
The Braves earned an 8-6 victory in Wednesday’s opener of this two-game series, Atlanta’s third win in its last four outings. The loss dropped Chicago to a 2-7 in its last nine, including 1-3 in the past four.
Atlanta is 6-3 at Turner Field so far, while the Cubs are 3-4 on highway. Going back to last season, Chicago is in a 6-18 slump on the road.
Atlanta has owned the Cubs in recent years, winning 15 of the last 18 meetings, including eight of the last nine at Turner Field.
Last year, the Braves won the first six clashes against Chicago before running into Hill in the season series finale, losing 8-3 at home. In that game, Hill outdueled John Smoltz, giving up just two runs (one earned) on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings.
Going back to last August, Hill has given up two earned runs or fewer in 10 of his last 11 outings, including the game against Atlanta. In his first two starts this year – a 9-3 win at Milwaukee and a 7-0 home victory over the Reds – Hill has surrendered a total of four hits and one run in 14 innings with four walks and 11 strikeouts.
Including his one start at Milwaukee this year, Hill is 2-1 in his last four road games, posting a 2.45 ERA.
Unlike Hill, Redman’s been a complete disaster to start the season, surrendering 12 runs in 8 1/3 innings in a pair of blowout home losses to the Mets (11-1) and Marlins (11-4). In his last three starts at Turner Field going back to 2006, Redman has given up 19 runs (all earned) on 25 hits in just 13 1/3 innings, which equates to a 12.83 ERA.
On the bright side, Redman is 2-2 with a 2.70 ERA in five career regular-season starts against the Cubs, giving up three earned runs or less in four of those outings.
The under is 4-1 in Hill’s last five starts, but the over has been the play in each of Redman’s last six trips to the mound. Also, five of the last six Cubs-Braves battles have eclipsed the posted price.
ATS ADVANTAGE: NONE

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Texas (6-8) at Chicago White Sox (6-7)
Javier Vazquez (2-0, 1.50) has a tough act to follow tonight, as he takes the mound for the White Sox a night after teammate Mark Buehrle tossed the season’s first no-hitter. The Rangers will counter with Vicente Padilla (0-3, 6.62) in the finale of this three-game series.
The White Sox had dropped three in a row before Buehrle came to the rescue on Wednesday, allowing just a single walk in throwing the first no-hitter of his career and the first since Florida rookie Anibal Sanchez turned the trick last September.
Texas took Monday’s series opener 8-1, but the Rangers are only 1-3 in their last four. Also, Ron Washington’s club is just 2-6 away from the Lone Star State this season.
The road team is 7-3 in the last 10 series meetings.
Vazquez pitched one-hit ball over 6 2/3 scoreless innings in his first start, a 3-0 home win over the Twins, then came back on Friday and held the Indians to two runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings, winning 6-4 on the road.
The 2-0 start for Vazquez is in sharp contrast to the way he finished 2006, when the righthander went 0-6 in his final 10 starts. Chicago also dropped all four of his no-decisions.
Vazquez got lit up in two starts against the Rangers last June, giving up a total of 11 earned runs and 21 hits in just 12 1/3 innings.
Padilla has struggled out of the gate, giving up 10 earned runs and 19 hits in 17 2/3 innings. He’s been particularly awful in two road outings, surrendering 10 runs, 15 hits, six walks and two home runs in 10 2/3 innings, losing to the Angels and Mariners by identical 8-3 scores. Going back to last season, Padilla has allowed four runs or more in six of his last nine starts.
Padilla made three starts against Chicago last year. He was awful in the first one (seven runs, 3 1/3 innings) but terrific in the ensuing two (combined one earned run and six hits in 15 innings). The Rangers went 1-2 in those contests, losing both of the games played in the Windy City.
The under is 11-3 in Vazquez’s last 14 starts, including 7-0 at home. However, the over is 6-1-1 in Padilla’s last eight road outings.
For Chicago, the under is on runs of 8-1-2 overall and 21-8-2 on Thursdays. Also, the under is 6-1-2 in the last nine series meetings. However, the Rangers are on a 5-2-1 “over” run.

THURSDAY'S SELECTION
I'm on a 199-161-12 free selection run after the Diamondbacks got the job done at San Diego last night. I've now banked 19 of my last 29 comp plays and I'm on a solid 33-18-3 Bonus Play run. And don't forget that I ended the football season by going 21-12-2 with my last 35 free gridiron plays.
For your Thursday freebie, I'm looking for the Reds to take care of the visiting Astros. After the Cincy bullpen gave one away late last night, look for Bronson Arroyo and the Reds to bounce back with this home win.
The Cincy righty has pitched well enough to win each of his three starts, but is 0-2 with a 3.48 ERA. Tough lefty opposing pitchers shutting down the Reds has helped keep Arroyo winless so far, but that won't be the case tonight. The Astros go with righty Woody Williams, who is 0-2 with 5.62 after being roughed up for five earned and eight hits in 5 2/3 versus the Phillies Saturday.
Williams has given up a lot of hits, has a high WHIP and has fanned just six batters in 16 innings of work. Adam Dunn and the Reds are 8-2 versus righty starters this year and have a solid .362 on-base percentage against such. Cincy has scored 19 runs in its last three games and will score early on Williams tonight.
In 19 career starts versus the Reds, Williams has a 5.35 ERA. Cincy knows this guy and the Reds will have success at the plate. Arroyo will get after the Astros, who have hit better of late but still struggle against righties, and he'll earn his first win as Cincy earns a series split.

Hey BB -

Are you posting in the MLB forum because I was unable to repost today, or are you posting the service plays in the MLB forum for good? Either way thanks!! I had a lot of work related travel today and will have more again tomorrow.

And if by chance you are posting in the MLB forum for good (with the hoops season being over) just let me know if you want my spreadsheets and how often you want them.
