Okay, I just went to vegas last week and tried this thing for the first time. Worst experience ever (didn't work if you couldn't guess).

But it gave me thicker skin and willingness to do it again.

Going to Colorado in a few weeks, anyone know if this $20 trick works in other places?

I think he's talking about tipping the hotel clerk so they upgrade your room for $20 but at reg. price.

Sorry, prior to my trip to vegas last week, i was reading up on the $20 tip.

...Basically, when you go to check in for your hotel room, you slip a $20 bill in between your credit card and driver's license (which they always ask you for) and simultaneously ask them "are there any complimentary upgrades available?" generally, the clerk wants your tip and will try hard to hook you up in a suite for no additional charge (except the $20 tip).

From what i hear this is commonplace in vegas, just wondering if i'll get some strange looks trying this in Colorado...?

Sounds like that would never work. No harm in trying though, I guess.

I've heard of it working in hotels in Vegas.

No place too fancy, none of the big places.

It's something straight out of a Las Vegas discussion board full of nickle slot players and the like. When I used to look at that board ages ago, there would be numerous discussions about the "trick".

I thought it was when Gyno tells you to use him as a referal for a book and you'll split the $20 bonus....then he stiffs you

$20 in Vegas is like dropping your change in a homeless man's cup, it doesn't get anyone's attention. Just straight up ask them what you can do for them to get upgraded, they will get the point of the question. Or, get a host and do the same with a gift of a bottle of wine in your hand when you ask. Or, get an AMEX Platinum and you get that as a complimentary service.

FHM is correct. Dont waste your money. the only time I would recommend using some $ is to grease a doorman to get past a club line. No point standing in a line with a sausage party when a little cash will open the door right away.

First job out of high school was working for a large Hotel. If youre dealing with anyone new forget it, they wouldnt want to take the chance to get in trouble.
Depending on what time you check in, and how busy the Hotel was the night before makes a difference, if it was full, then they have less room to check you into, if you check in early same thing.
The best thing you could do is ask how busy they were lastnight/when you check in.
Look for the Asst Mgr at the front desk and offer him $$, HE can make shit happen if its not busy or overbooked
I know if someone offered me $20+ for a up grade, i would have done it in a second

If they don't budge do you ask for the 20 back?

I'm a rookie at this too...not sure how it goes but I heard if they can't do anything they give you back your $20 ($50-$100 at nicer casinos/longer stays) automatically.

If they do keep it, I don't think it is worth it to ask for $20 back. It is vegas, just gotta win it back!
