If you weren't already aware, I am in a slump. After a 7-5 lead going into the 9th, the Jays blew the game yesterday to cost us a 2-0 day. Eventually, these games will go our way. So, let us plow through the bad and get back to winning. I have no doubt that this season will end in a strong, positive fashion.[/FONT]

2007 RECORD:12-13-0 -1.40 Units

SUNDAY 4/29/2007: ONE PLAY

Milwaukee Brewers (Claudio Vargas) @ Houston Astros (Woody Williams)

PLAY ON: MILWAUKEE BREWERS (Moneyline, -105) To Win 1 Unit

Brewers Writeup

Claudio Vargas has been plagued with the "bad team bug." As a young competitor, it's tough to start your career on the Montreal Expos only to be traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2006. However, as Vargas hits the prime years of his career, he finds himself in a competitive situation on the Milwaukee Brewers. He represents an integral part of a strong pitching staff backed by a potent Brewers offense. In his 3 starts this season, Vargas has already made it obvious that he is here to compete at a higher level. He has achieved victory for his team in all three of his starts while keeping his ERA at 3.60. Not only that, but with 22 strikeouts in 15 innings, his stuff has looked dominant. On the mound, he has a strong presence and swagger. Besides his lackluster history, there is nothing about Vargas that has me concerned about his ability to perform this afternoon.

It's hard to tell when a pitcher is toast, but Woody Williams is flirting with that label. At 41 years old, Williams has shown an inability to pitch outside of his old pitchers paradise in San Diego. He is sporting a 5.90 ERA without a win on the season. What else is there to say? He is clearly hittable to a powerful Brewers lineup, and they should make him pay for any mistakes in todays game. After a 10-1 blowout loss last night, the Brewers are hungry to hit up a respectable division rival pitcher. I wouldn't be surprised if the relentless Brewers returned the favor today with a blowout victory for themselves.

I expect Houston to overlook Claudio Vargas today. This Astros team is inherently full of themselves, and after a decisive 10-1 victory, they should be very relaxed today against young Vargas. There is nothing to prove in today's game for the 'Stros, so why not just swing for the fences? After all, they did score 10 runs yesterday. In sum, I expect the 'Stros to look silly today against Vargas's dominant stuff. With such a small disparity in pitcher talent between Williams and Vargas, I won't be surprised if this game is over by the 5 th inning.

Good Luck
