I'm still not totally convinced this isn't a joke...

PALMA DE MALLORCA, Balearic Islands -- One is the king of grass, the other the king of clay. On Wednesday, Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal will be king of both.
Four-time Wimbledon champion Federer plays two-time French Open winner Nadal in an exhibition on a customized half-clay, half-grass court on this Spanish island.

The unique court took 19 days and cost organizers $1.63 million to create.

"It'll be fun to find out what it's like to play on a court with mixed surfaces," Federer said Tuesday. "And it ought to be interesting to see who chooses the better tactic."
Organizers needed 19 days and $1.63 million to create the court, which divides the surfaces by halves for a unique match in which a player can receive on clay and hit a winner on grass -- or vice versa.
"The result is not the most important thing. It's about having fun out there," the top-ranked Federer said. "It's going to be exciting and a good atmosphere. It doesn't always need to be crazy serious out on the match courts."
A sellout crowd of nearly 7,000 is expected at the Palma Arena for the match, which is backed by the Balearic Islands tourism bureau.
Nadal comes from Mallorca and has the homecourt advantage.
"I like the fact that the stadium is located in Mallorca, Rafa's home," Federer said. "He has been to Basel [Switzerland] after all, and now I've got the opportunity to play at his place for once."
Federer hasn't lost on grass in four years, a 48-match run that includes four straight titles at Wimbledon.
The second-ranked Nadal has won a record 72 straight clay-court matches, including two consecutive titles at Roland Garros in Paris.
Nadal holds a 7-3 career edge against Federer. He beat the Swiss star 6-4, 6-4 in the Monte Carlo final on April 22 to extend his clay court record against Federer to 5-0.
On grass, Federer leads 1-0, having beaten Nadal in four sets in the Wimbledon final last year.
Federer has 10 Grand Slam titles, but still needs to win the French Open to complete a career Grand Slam of all four championships.

This has to be an injury waiting to happen. both surfaces are just completely different to run on. But, neither one will probably try anyway so I'm inclined to agree with the above poster.

Too much money is wasted on pure shit in this world. keeping death row inmates alive, not killing people who have life sentences, and now a charity match for 1.63 million which is more than either would make for winning a grand slam.

Why not just play on 3rd's and put a hard court in there too with a retactable roof that kept opening and closiong the entire time during the match to make it outdoor/indoor.

What's 1.63 million, just spend a few more million to add a couple extra quirks to it.

Ok, I watch tennis sometimes but I'm not a huge fan, so I might be wrong.

But..wouldn't the player on clay have the big advantage? The clay would slow down the opponent's shot, and then you could pound it hard into the grass?

You switch sides in tennis.

The idea I guess is to see who really is the best as they both have to play on different surfaces.

I understand that, it just seems silly to me, like playing tennis on a hill

There are a ton of different sources with this story. This is real.

Thanks HPark, I believe you but I think you left out one word...This is real stupid! As evidence I quote Federer from the posted article...

"The result is not the most important thing. It's about having fun out there," the top-ranked Federer said. "It's going to be exciting and a good atmosphere. It doesn't always need to be crazy serious out on the match courts."

...HUH? Maybe Switzerland has adopted the American educational system where everyone is a winner, everyone should have their self esteem boosted. Maybe we should get rid of trophies and winners and just give everyone a medal for having fun out there? Is this the Special Olympics or Professional Tennis?

Neither, it's an exhibition.

I don't see Manning and Brady playing all-out in exhibition football. It's the same thing.

I say it goes 3 sets for entertainment value but then Tony roche comes into the 3rd set tiebreak with a steal chair and takes out Nadal while uncle Toni chases him off causing a mass brawl in the stands.

Hell, its all for entertainment so why not.

Thank you for agreeing with me! It's hard to get a liberal to agree with anything truthful or logical so I am real pleased with myself. It is the same thing as exhibition (err, the NFL prefers that we call it "pre-season") football and everyone with a brain agrees that is "real stupid".

That being said(I hate that term but you can't watch ESPN, especially Stephen A. and not hear it a couple of times each day), if they make the purse, winner take all (fat chance in this day of up front appearance money), then I would want to watch it too.

Now I've seen it all

I personally think they will be going all out once the match gets going. They are world class athletes at the top of their game - they didn't get there without having super competitive personalities (especially in a sport like tennis). Neither of them are going to want to lose - and they are rivals to boot. This match going to be televised in the US?
