Why is Greg Popovich not looked upon as a great coach by the media?

I would add players as well...

Riley, Jackson, and Larry Brown are always talked about as great coaches of all time. But Popovich's name is never thrown in that conversation. Why not?

Why do those other coaches get mentioned but Popovich doesn't? Is it because he doesn't have that look at me personality?

I was thinking about that today and really had no answer for it. His teams are very fundamentally sounds and don't seem to make the big time mistakes really.

And let me clarify, when I say great I mean all-time great.

Because he has the cache and personality of a rock and because of the pok-marks all over his face. Seriously though, he is the best coach in the league

I don't know if he is the best but he is near the top in my book. Every year his team plays a style that can beat anyone. ANd they always seem so well prepared.

I agree with Whormoan. The "pok-marks" are his downfall.

because he is "boring". Pop, Phil and Pat are easily the best in the game

He is the Bill Belichick of the NBA - since he got TD in 1998 the Spurs have the best winning percentage of ANY TEAM IN ANY SPORT - he has 3 titles and two losses coming by Manu's foul up 3 in OT of game 7 and Derik Fisher's prayer - this team was inches away from 5 rings - the dude knows how to put it together - just wait to you see Nash walking the ball up court.

Pop is best coach in the league. But there is a difference between him and the others coaches you named. The other coaches took multiple teams to the championship.

He just does not get credit because it's San Antonio - could you imagine if Isiah Thomas and the Knicks were the determining factor for the title for over a decade - Duncan would be considered the greatest center of all time and Thomas would be better than Auberach - it's just a real small market town - thank God the NBA has a salary cap and any team team can really compete unlike MLB - he's a true professional and so are the players - the Hornets lost that series because of Pop.

I don't know what Paul does not shoot more often - it looks like he has a really nice shot - but he's reluctant to take it.

The Best Coaches

David Thorpe agrees with ESPN Forecast that the four best coaches are Gregg Popovich, Tom Thibodeau, Doc Rivers and Erik Spoelstra.

Gregg Popovich of the San Antonio Spurs was named the NBA Coach of the Year on Tuesday, becoming just the third three-time winner of the award in league history.

Popovich, who guided the Spurs to an NBA-best 62-20 regular-season record, joins Pat Riley and Don Nelson as the only coaches to win the Red Auerbach Trophy three times. The longtime Spurs coach also won the award after the 2002-03 and 2011-12 seasons.
This marked the 15th consecutive season the Spurs have reached the 50-win mark under Popovich.
Popovich tallied 59 first-place votes and 380 points in balloting among sportswriters and broadcasters, finishing just ahead of Phoenix Suns coach Jeff Hornacek, who had 339 points (37 first-place votes).
Chicago's Tom Thibodeau (159 points), Charlotte's Steve Clifford (127) and Toronto's Dwane Casey (70) rounded out the top five.
The award has been handed out since the 1962-63 season.

WTF has Tom Thibodeau done to be mentioned in the same sentence as POPS?

Still the best coach in the NBA. Knows how to spot a good 3rd or 4th round player that fits his system better than anybody out there.

To answer the original question in my opinion, He doesn't kiss the media's ass.

He just won COY voted on by the media and pretty much everyone agrees he is the best coach in the game and 1 of the best ever. Not sure people underrating him is anything more than narrative....
