Evangelist Challenges Atheists to Bible-Less Debate on ABC

NEW YORK – A prominent Christian best-selling author is asserting that he can prove the existence of God without using the Bible, and has challenged two atheists to a debate.

Ray Comfort, author of God Doesn't Believe in Atheists, alongside fellow Christian and actor Kirk Cameron (Growing Pains) will butt heads with two ardent nonbelievers using only scientific fact in a debate sponsored by ABC. Comfort says that the evidence will “absolutely” confirm that there is a God, and he will not speak about his faith.

"Most people equate atheism with intellectualism," explained Comfort in a statement, "but it's actually an intellectual embarrassment. I am amazed at how many people think that God's existence is a matter of faith. It's not, and I will prove it at the debate – once and for all. This is not a joke. I will present undeniable scientific proof that God exists.”

The debate is in reaction to the “Blasphemy Challenge” that started late in 2006. The two creators of the movement encouraged all people to tape themselves with a short message that will “damn themselves to hell.” Participants must recite the line "I deny the Holy Spirit,” and then upload their video onto YouTube.

Comfort and Cameron felt that these two would be some of the most difficult people to convince that God does indeed exist, so contacted them about having a discussion.

ABC has said that they will film the debate, which will take place on May 5 in New York City, and will stream it live on their website as well as use footage for their program Nightline. Martin Bashir, co-anchor of Nightline, will moderate the event.

Cameron will use the event to also speak out against evolution, which he thinks is not credible and a major contributor to the growth in atheism.

"Evolution is unscientific. In reality, it is a blind faith that's preached with religious zeal as the gospel truth. I'm embarrassed to admit that I was once a naïve believer in the theory,” said the former television star in a statement. “Atheism has become very popular in universities – where it's taught that we evolved from animals and that there are no moral absolutes. So we shouldn't be surprised when there are school shootings.”

Comfort felt impelled to hold the debate, because he is worried about the state of Christianity around the world, especially in Europe. According to a Zukerman study, in Sweden as many as 85 percent of the population are non-believers; Japan has 65 percent; France with 54 percent; and 44 percent of British citizens do not believe in God.

The Christian writer also noted that there is a genuine attack against Christian beliefs, more than other religions.

"[T]here is something more sinister here than a few people not believing in God,” concluded the author. “Why would so many be so bitter against Christianity in particular? Why aren't they making videos that blaspheme Buddha or Mohammed or Ghandi? We made our own video clip and posted it on www.Hollywoodblasphemy.com to expose why."

Comfort has spoken at several atheist events, one in which he was a platform speaker at the 2001 convention for the American Atheists, Inc.

I can see why the God guys would want to debate these two. Personally, they are probably not the ones I would like holding up my end of this argument. I have not heard of the "Blasphemy Challenge" but it sounds silly and not serious to me.
However, unless the God Guys conjure up the Holy Spirit and have it perform a miracle they have already lost in my opinion.
Most Atheists care less what others believe, I consider them the same way a Christian might look at a Star Wars zealot.
The only problem I have with them is they appear to posses the majority of the nuclear weapons.

I am offering a preview of what this guy is going to use as argument.......introducing "atheists nightmare", the banana

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zwbhAXe5yk

WTF? I think that's serious and really it Could NOT be more stupid.

So why did God make poisonous berries that that looks good and are easy for us to grab....just to screw with us?

I'd watch this debate...but alas I'd think the "proof" would be more of this dumbass banana shit.

My guess is they may go along the lines of the first law of thermodynamics. If it's accepted that matter and energy can't be destroyed or created, then who created the original matter or energy?

It's a standard debate technique with this subject - thats my guess of the route they'll go.

Actually the evangelist has a much better chance winning the debate if the Bible is out of equation. He would be forced to defend all that bullshits, myths and half truths and exaggerations that is in the Bible.
If the guy is a good debater he can force the atheist to eventually concede that there might be a god out there.
Noone can deny that there might be something out there, its just what is in Bible was clearly fabricated by people

That was the premise of Angels & Demons.

But...I don't get why the Answer isn't "Science doesn't know everything"

I think it's pretty weak proof that because we don't know it had to be God. Maybe it was Magic.

But the guy is NOT going to "make the atheist to eventually concede that there MIGHT be something" the guy is going to (quote) "I will present undeniable scientific proof that God exists.” so I guess we will see

I personally will watch it for entertaining purposes and I won't generalize by saying that all 'God believers' are represented by this guy and the actor (now turned Evangelist)

As to who created the 'original matter/energy' the proper 'google keywords' to find ongoing investigation in the field can be something like "quantum vacuum fluctuation"

Small article here (for the ones interested anyway)

But Einstein did believe in God.
One of the greatest minds of our era and he believes that there is a God.
Has he spoken to you lately? He's dead you know.
Einstein said he did not believe in a supernatural god or a personal god. If you subtract the supernatural your going to end up with a pretty limited deity.
Time for your nightly beer bb so you can make even less sense than usual.

Nice.

Couple of years ago, was doing some work out of town, and there was this 10-12 year old French Fox Hound that was living in the snow outside his "owner's" apartment. Told the guy that the dog obviously needed to see a vet (his hair was missing in patches, he was limping, and had something wrong with his ears because he was always banging them on the floor/ground), and that we would be glad to take him and pay for it, if he would be willing to let us find him a home (we were gonna take him to the vet anyway), because the guy could barely take care of himself. He said 'sure, I was just going to shoot him anyway.'

Took him to the vet, had 4 teeth pulled, had 2 beebees removed from where he had been shot, special shampoo and ear drops for the yeast infection, and asprin for his arthritic hip. Gave him to a friend of mine (already have a dog that is getting up there in years) to take care of, and he is still kickin. Happiest frickin dog I've ever seen.

I watched about ten minutes of the video and was amused to see the guy who said he could "prove it without use of scriptures or Bible" immediately begin using Old Testament references to make his points.
