Monday's Plays..

40 Dime –

PISTONS
Lay the points with Detroit tonight at home in Game 2 over Chicago.
Bulls’ coach Scott Skiles openly lamented his team’s inability to match up with Detroit, and while he no doubt is trying to light a fire under his team I have to agree with his assessment.
The Pistons are no fools. They aren’t going to fall for the head game that Skiles is trying to implement. Instead, they are going to keep rolling with what worked for them in their Game 1 blowout of the Bulls.
Namely, suffocating defense and balanced scoring.
Detroit’s All-Star guards, Chauncey Billups and Rip Hamilton seem to be a problem for Chicago’s Ben Gordon to guard. Billups had his way early with Gordon, who also seems to be a defensive liability against Hamilton.
The other problem the Bulls are going to have is against the Pistons frontcourt, because Rasheed Wallace, Chris Webber and Antonio McDyess can all score from the perimeter. Former Piston Ben Wallace becomes less of a defensive factor when he has to step out to guard any one of those three.
I guarantee you the Pistons come out with the same intensity for Game 2 that they had in Game 1. Coach Flip Saunders is not going to let this team relax and that’s why I see them winning and covering again tonight.
The fact the Pistons can rely on all five of their starters for scoring makes them so difficult to defend against.
Take Detroit and lay the points as they grab the win and cover in Game 2.

10 Dime –

ASTROS (With Oswalt as listed pitcher)
Take the Astros tonight on the road as a slight chalk over the Reds.
Roy Oswalt has dominated the Reds in his career, going 18-1 with a 2.46 ERA in 21 starts and two relief appearances against them. He beat Cincinnati in his last start, allowing one run and four hits in eight innings on Wednesday night.
Houston has won four of five games against Cincinnati so far this year.
Astros left fielder Carlos Lee is red hot right now, going 8-for-14 in his last four games. He has 25 RBIs in his last 22 games and is 6-for-8 in his last two games against the Reds.
The Reds will send Kyle Lohse to the mound tonight and he was on the losing end to Oswalt and the Astros on Wednesday. Cincinnati hasn’t given him any run support this year, scoring only 11 runs in his six starts.
This number is a gift considering Oswalt’s history of success against the Reds. Lay the juice and take the Astros for the road win.

GIANTS (With Perez and Zito as listed pitcher)
Take the Giants tonight as a small home chalk over the Mets.
Barry Zito gets the nod for San Francisco and he’s settled in after a rough few outings to start the season. The left-hander is 1-1 with a 2.11 ERA over his last three starts, including seven strong innings in his last start against Colorado. Zito didn’t factor in the decision, but allowed only two earned runs and four hits in San Fran’s 5-3 win.
Oliver Perez starts for the Mets and he has looked better this year, but is still too inconsistent to warrant this price on the road. Perez is 0-3 with a 6.60 ERA in six lifetime outings against the Giants.
Take San Francisco for the home win behind Zito tonight.

Tony Mathew's Free MLB Selection for May 7, 2007.

Matchup: Seattle Mariners vs. New York Yankees

Selection: Seattle/New York Over 11 (-110)

Explanation: Today we expect many runs to be scored as the Seattle Mariners face-off against the New York Yankees in Monday's MLB contest.

The Seattle Mariners will use starting pitcher Miguel Batista. Miguel Batista has struggled this entire season so far (6.30 ERA), and it's safe to say that this very talented New York Yankees offense will score many runs. The New York Yankees have already proven they can score many runs against this Seattle Mariners team (the New York Yankees have already scored 24 runs in just 3 games against the Seattle Mariners this season). It's clear that the New York Yankees will score many runs!

As for the New York Yankees, they will use starting pitcher Matt DeSalvo. Matt DeSalvo should not even be pitching in the Major League yet, however, due to many injures the New York Yankees had to bring him up. We have seen this time and time again... When you bring a pitcher up from the minors who is not ready, he gets killed aganast the big boys in the Majors. To say the least, the Seattle Mariners will score many runs tonight.

The Over is 10-4-1 in the New York Yankees last 14 home games, and we expect to see anpther high-scoring game tonight!

Take the Seattle Mariners/New York Yankees Over 11!

Atlanta (James) - 120** over San Diego (Young)

San Diego lost both Young starts vs. Atlanta last season, Young allowing 13 runs, lasting only six innings. Atlanta is 6-0 last six James home starts, James allowing an average of 1.3 runs. Braves went 7-2 over Padres last season.

Chicago Bulls + 5* over Detroit Pistons

Chicago figures an inspired effort off getting embarrassed at Detroit 96-69 in game one on Saturday. The Bulls may have entered a bit complacent off sweeping defending champ Miami 4-0 in the first round. They're now 4-2 ATS (3-3 SU) vs. Detroit last six meetings.

Golden State Warriors + 4* over Utah Jazz

Golden State enters on a confidence building roll off beating NBA best record Dallas 4-2 in the first round capped by a 111-86 home win in game six last Thursday. The rested Warriors are 9-2 ATS last 11 road games and 3-0 ATS (2-1 SU) vs. Utah last three meetings.

MLB Washington vs. Milwaukee

Take Milwaukee Brewers

1 Unit on Milwaukee -1.5 -102 (listing Capuano) The Brew Crew will shut down the Nats at home with Capuano on the hill. Capuano is 11-1 against the money line vs. teams outscored by their opponents by 1 or more runs/game on the season over the last 3 seasons. Capuano is also 17-5 against the money line in the first half of the season over the last 2 seasons. Milwaukee is 10-1 against the money line in home games when playing on Monday over the last 2 seasons.

Brewers win this one easily by at least 2.

under as the Giants host the Mets tonight.

Why the under this evening?

Simple. Zito will show up in a big way today and Perez will have to keep speed. Zito realizes that the reason why he was to obtain such a huge contract is not to be a mediocre pitcher, but to be at his best at all times. In particular, to be sharp when the Giants play division leaders or some of the best teams in the National League such as the Mets where they get to gauge themselves.

I give a lot of props to Randolph as he has stuck with Perez as I thought Perez had pretty much thrown his arm out but from Game 7 against the Cards to now, Perez has continued to throw effectively for the Mets.

Furthermore, the under is 6-1 in the Mets last 7 road game while the under is 13-3 when the Giants are home underdogs. Look for this game to be a pitcher's duel as both pitchers with their respective 3.42 and 3.52 ERA's (which is steadily declining even further) get the job done as this will be a 1 run ballgame for either side - however, the total will not exceed the posted total.

Colorado with Francis.

JEFF BENTON

For Monday, take the plus money with the Reds at home against Astros ace Roy Oswalt.
I know Oswalt has absolutely SICK numbers against the Reds in his career – and by sick, I mean 18-1 with a 2.46 ERA in 23 games (21 starts). And that includes a 3-1 victory in his most recent start on Wednesday night at home, where the veteran righty gave up just a run on four hits in eight innings.
But in two road starts this year – at Milwaukee and at Philadelphia – Oswalt got torched for 10 runs (all earned) in 12 innings. And the fact remains that Houston’s offense is extremely inconsistent. To wit: They’ve scored 20 runs in three of Oswalt’s starts, but just 9 runs in his other four. In fact, here’s Houston’s run production over its last 10 games: 1, 13, 2, 7, 3, 2, 1, 10, 1, 3.
Like I said, inconsistent!
The Reds, on the other hand, are mashing the ball, scoring at least 5 runs in eight of their last 10 games, including a total of 26 in four games since getting shut down by Oswalt. Cincinnati’s problem has been pitching – but that problem doesn’t include tonight’s starter, Kyle Lohse. Lohse opposed Oswalt last week and did well, giving up three runs on eight hits in six innings. He’s 1-2 despite a 3.12 ERA, and in two starts at home, he’s surrendered a total of three runs (two earned) in 13 1/3 innings (1.35 ERA), and the Reds won both games.
I could easily see Lohse handling this Astros lineup like he did at home last year when he pitched eight scoreless innings of four-hit ball in a 14-0 win in August. And if the Reds can scratch a few runs off of Oswalt (he gave up five runs in 12 innings in Cincinnati last year), they’ll cash us a nice underdog ticket!

Game: Los Angeles Dodgers at Florida Marlins May 7 2007 7:05PM

Prediction: Los Angeles Dodgers

Reason: The Dodgers have won 10 of their last 14 road games. LA is a 15-7 in their last 22 games as the favorite. Penny takes the moound tonight with a 3-0 record and 1.64 ERA. The Dodgers have won 5 of his 6 starts this season. Nolasco makes his second start of the season. The Marlins are 1-4 in his last 5 games where they have been the underdog. The Marlins have lost 5 of the last 6 meetings.

Game: Chicago Bulls at Detroit Pistons
May 7 2007 8:00PM

Prediction: over

Reason:
Despite the opening game in this series finishing below the total, the "over" remains a profitable 10-4-1 the last 15 times that the Pistons hosted the Bulls and 8-4 in 12 games this season when the Bulls were listed as road underdogs in the 3.5 to six point range. The "over" is also 12-6 the last 18 times that the Bulls played a road game with an over/under line ranging from 180 to 184.5. Looking back further and we find the "over" at 47-29 (62%) when the Bulls played a road game with an over/under line in that range. Piston home games averaged more points (189) than did their road games this season. Conversely, the Bulls played higher-scoring games on the road, averaging 194.5 points.
Consider a play on the OVER

RAZOR SHARP

ATLANTA (James) -130 over San Diego

Bobby Maxwell

Gotta go with the Braves here as they absolutely dominated the Padres last season and tore up San Diego starter Chris Young both times they faced him last year.
Atlanta took two of three against the Dodgers this weekend just like San Diego did in Florida against the Marlins. The Braves send lefty Chuck James (3-2, 4.83 ERA) to the mound today.
Last year, Atlanta won seven of the nine meetings with the Padres and scored 10 or more runs in each of the last four of that series. The Braves lit up Young in two outings last year, knocking him around for 13 runs on 15 hits in just six innings of work. Atlanta knocked him out of the game after three innings in both outings.
Atlanta has won both of James' last two starts, including Wednesday when he allowed three runs on eight hits in a 4-3 home win over the Phillies.
The Braves' offense likes to see the Padres and Chris Young coming. Let's play Atlanta in this one.

You have to love playoff basketball! Throw all of your regular season stats out the window, such as the fact 3 of the 4 regular season meetings between the Bulls and the Pistons sailed OVER the total.
Nothing doing on the OVER in Game 1 as the Bulls scored a paltry 69-points and the game held UNDER by nearly 10-points.
I will ride the UNDER once again tonight, as I certainly expect the Bulls to net a few more than their Game 1 output, but I doubt the offense combined between the teams will carry this one OVER the total as this series sure looks like it is going to be defense first.
Until I see concrete evidence that these teams can regularly play a postseason game in the 90's, I am going to back the UNDER to come through.

Defending World Champs send Anthony Reyes up against Jeff Francis and the rockies in Game One of this series in St. Louis. With Reyes in fine current form and 0-5 in his team starts this season, and Francis in struggling current form, look for Reyes to enter the win column here tonight.

(915) CLE Indians
(916) BAL Orioles

Take "(916) BAL Orioles"

Baltimore starter Steve Trachsel has been decent, throwing strikes while allowing just 30 hits in 35 innings. A plus for the Orioles is a revamped offensive lineup. Catcher Ramon Hernandez batted cleanup for the third straight game, and hit a three-run homer in the first inning and lifted a sacrifice fly in the second after Jay Payton delivered a two-run single in their 8-2 win over Cleveland. There's plenty of sock in this lineup with Melvin Mora and Miguel Tejada, plus a hard throwing young pen. The home dog offers excellent wagering value.

Doug Davis has pitched in some tough luck so far for the Diamondbacks, but the big lefty is actually in excellent form right now. Freddy Garcia may or may not go in this game for the Phillies. Garcia did something to his knee in a bizarre collision with a golf cart prior to the Sunday night game. Whether or not Garcia goes doesn't matter to me, and I'm looking for 'Zona to get this series off to a good start with the win here."

For Monday take the Warriors in Utah.

I do admit that this is not the greatest value I have ever seen as playing in Utah is pretty much as tough as it gets and this number is not that large but I will still grab the points in this spot on the visitors from the west.
We all know how Don Nelson's crew shocked the world in that opening series upsetting Dallas. The Warriors may not play at that same insanely high level but they are a confident team that will not all of a sudden turn into mush. Baron Davis is a superstar and Stephen Jackson is a confident gunslinger. Then you have very solid pieces in Jason Richardson, Al Harrington, Andres Biedrens, Mikael Pietrus, Matt Barnes and others.
Utah is a very solid team that just won game seven in Houston late Saturday night. Carlos Boozer is a stud and there are plenty of other quality players on the Jazz as well. Sure Jerry Sloan's team at home could win and cover this game but if there was ever a game to not be on the top of their game this is probably it. The Warriors at least have come down from their big high of winning that last series, or at least somewhat have. The Jazz though just flew home 30 or so hours ago after their huge road win at the Toyota Center.
This is not the easiest play ever by any means but to get some points with the more rested, but not too rested, Warriors is fine with me. Nellie's club is a very talented group that will compete once again here and possibly even pull this thing out as well.

Today's Pick: HOUSTON ASTROS
MLB
Houston vs. Cincinnati
7:10 EST

It's no secret that Roy Oswalt has dominated the Reds in his career. He's 18-1 with a 2.46 ERA in 21 career starts vs Cincy, including a 3-1 home win earlier this season. Houston lost 10 of 15 games in 2006 vs Cincinnati but the Astros have taken four of five from the Reds so far in 2007. Oswalt is off to another solid start in 2007, with a 4-2 mark in seven starts (3.06 ERA). Kyle Lohse will take the mound for Cincy and while he's done a solid job, he got little too show for it in six starts (1-2, 3.12 ERA). He's allowed three runs or less in FOUR of six outings this year but the Reds have scored a total of just 11 runs in those starts. Tonight against Oswalt, Lohse is in the wrong place at the wrong time, once again. Take the Astros.

BIG AL PAID PLAYS

At 8 pm, on Monday, our selection is on the Chicago Bulls plus the points over Detroit, as Scott Skiles' men fall into a super playoff system that is 74% ATS since 1990. What we want to do is play on any team on the road that was blown out on the road by 22 points or more in its previous playoff game. These teams bounce back strong in their very next game, and are a strong 19-3 ATS if their foe has a win percentage of .675 or less. Take Chicago. Good luck, as always...Al McMordie.

At 7:05 pm our selection is on the Los Angeles Dodgers over the Florida Marlins. Brad Penny is at it again. He is putting up the kind of numbers that could land him a job as the starting pitcher for the National League in this year's All Star Game, just like he did in 2006. The question is, if that happens, will he completely fall apart in the 2nd half again? Other than fatigue, there is really no way to explain the phenomenon of a pitcher who performs differently in the first and second halves of the season. But it does happen, and it actually happens quite a bit. Last year, Penny was 10-2 with a 2.91 ERA prior to the All Star break. This season, although it is barely one month old, Penny is actually out-performing those numbers so far (3-0 with a 1.64 ERA). And it would appear almost certain that the Dodgers are a better overall team than they were in 2006 as well. On the road, Penny has only given up 2 ER in 14 innings so far. Florida's 24 year old part-time righthanded starter from last year, Ricky Nolasco has just come back from elbow problems and earned his second start after pitching well against the Mets on May 1. But there is a big difference between the pitcher's park that is Shea and the hitter-friendly Dolphins Stadium, so this second start against a first place team and an All Star pitcher is a lot to ask. Take the Dodgers. As always, good luck...Al McMordie. And don't miss my NL Total of the Week or my NBA Blowout Winner.

At 7:10 pm our NL Total of the Week is on the Houston Astros and Cincinnati Reds 'over' the total. With the defending World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals reeling with a 12-17 record and in last place in the NL Central, that division is totally up for grabs, unless of course the Brewers continue their juggernaut and just run away with it. But for now anyway, the fact that the Cards, who have pretty much dominated this division in the past several years, seem to be a mere shell of the team they were must be a huge motivating factor for both of these teams who begin a critical 4 game series at the Great America Ballpark. And with that motivation will probably come some free-swinging bats, as is usually the case when these two squads meet up in Cincy. In the last eight games played here between the Reds and Astros, a total of 77 runs have been scored or an average of over 9 1/2 runs per game. And in 6 of those 8 games, there have been a total of 9 or more runs scored. If you're a believer that Reds' righthander Kyle Lohse can turn his less-than-stellar career around at age 29 by changing leagues and going from the Twins to the Reds, then good for you. I, for one, am not sold. In his first 4 starts, Lohse fans had cause to be optimistic, but his last 2 starts have seen him begin to revert back to his old form, which is anything but good. I'm expecting that trend to continue against the hot bats of the Astros. Take the 'over'. As always, good luck...Al McMordie. And don't miss my NL Side Winner or my NBA Blowout tonight.

MLB for 05/07/2007

Rockies at Cardinals
Prediction: Cardinals
The defending World Series Champs send RHP Anthony Reyes up against Colorado lefty Jeff Francis in Game 1 of this three-game set in St. Louis. Although the Cards are 0-5 in his starts this season, Reyes is in fine form (5.46 ERA, 23 Ks). Francis, on the other hand, has been struggling (1-4, 6.19 ERA). Look for Reyes to enter the win column here tonight.

Lenny Del Genio

MLB for 05/07/2007

Rockies at Cardinals
Prediction: 'Over'
The Cardinals have one of the worst home records in the majors but are starting to get things turned around at Busch Stadium. Meanwhile, the Rockies have been struggling away from Coors Field but are coming off their best road series of the season. The Cardinals and Rockies both look to carry the momentum from their latest series into Monday night when they open a three-game set in St. Louis. The Cards defeated Houston 3-1 on Sunday to take two of three versus the Astros and win its second straight home series. The defending World Series Champions, who had the NL's second-best home record last season at 49-31, have the second-worst home record in the majors at 5-10 this season. St. Louis dominated the Rockies at Busch last season winning five of six. Colorado has the second-worst road record in the NL at 7-11 but took two of three at Cincinnati over the weekend for its first road series win of 2007. With both teams on the "up-tick" and with this pitching matchup, I'm playing the game to go over. Lefty Jeff Francis of the Rockies has allowed 40 hits and 21 ERs in his last four starts (over 23 2/3 innings) for an ERA of 7.99. RHP Anthony Reyes of the Cards is 0-5 in five starts this year with a 5.46 ERA. Take the 'over'.

Yes! That capper on Wagerline Survivor I had been talking about the last few days finally made a pick today. He does not pick daily which is fine with me because I have been following him at 5 units per pick.

Monday pick: LA Dodgers -116 (going for #11 in a row)

Larry Ness' Weekend Wipeout Winner-MLB (8-3 last week in MLB!)
My Weekly Wipeout Winner is on the LA Dodgers at 7:05 ET. The Marlins were shut down by one of MLB's best pitchers yesterday in Jake Peavy, getting just two hits and striking out 11 times in a 3-1 loss. It was the team's third loss in its last four games (after winning seven of 10), as the Marlins have struck out 40 times in that span! Tonight, they'll face another of MLB's best pitchers in 2007, ex-teammate Brad Penny. Penny is 0-1 with an 8.18 ERA in two previous starts against his former team but I don't believe that two games is much of a sample. Rather, let's concentrate on Penny's pitching in 2007. He's made six starts (team is 5-1), going 3-0 with a 1.64 ERA (2nd-best in the NL). He's yet to allow a HR, in 38.1 innings. Ricky Nolasco goes for the Marlins and the second-year pitcher will be making just his third start in '07 (he was 11-11 with a 4.82 ERA in 2006). Nolasco lasted just 1.1 innings back on April 6 (allowed three ERs), before going on the DL with inflammation in his elbow. He returned to action last Tuesday, pitching very well at Shea against the Mets (5 IP / 6 hits / 1 ER). However, it's just one game. This will be his first-ever start vs the Dodgers and LA easily handled Florida last year, winning five of the six meetings. I'm riding Penny's hot pitching, which has seen him allow more than two ERs in just one (he allowed three ERs!) of six starts this year. Weekly Wipeout Winner on the LA Dodgers

FLORIDA +1.12 over Los Angeles PINNACLE

So, Brad Penny is 3-0 with a 1.64 ERA in six starts this year; pretty impressive indeed. It looks very nice on paper and stats usually don’t lie but we’re here to tell you that Penny is on the verge of getting rocked because he’s nowhere near the dominant pitcher his numbers suggest. For one, he’s walked (17) more batters then he’s struck out (15). He’s also been extremely fortunate in that a lot of hard hit balls have been right at people. And lastly, he’s had a very favorable schedule, facing the Rockies, Giants twice, Arizona twice and Pittsburgh. At the time he faced San Fran they were struggling miserably at the plate and the same can be said for the others. Penny’s fortunes are about to come to an end and we’re suggesting this is the place it’ll happen, as the Fish are among the league leaders offensively. Brad Penny is not that good and he’ll be exposed real soon. Play: Florida +1.12 (Risking 2 units).

Philadelphia –1.03 over ARIZONA PINNACLE

The big difference here is offense, as the Phillies are seeing beach balls and the Snakes are seeing BB’s. This is a very decent hitter’s park and with the way the Phillies are hitting the ball we trust they’ll outscore this host’s laboring offense. Against Mike Pelfrey (0-3, 6.75 ERA) yesterday the D-Backs scored three times and it wasn’t pretty. They’ve now scored a total of 14 runs in their past six games and only once during that stretch did they score more then three times. Meanwhile, Jimmy Rollins is batting .314 in the leadoff position, Shane Victorino is hitting everything and is now batting .304, Chase Utely is batting .298, Ryan Howard is batting clean-up and has not warmed up yet, Aaron Rowand is among the leaders with a batting average of .368 and the list goes on. These Phillies are an offensive juggernaut and when we see them playing a struggling offense that has one win in their past seven games and we can lay a short price like the one here, we’re in and so should you be. Play: Philadelphia –1.03 (Risking 2.06 units to win 2).

Colorado +1.14 over ST. LOUIS PINNACLE

Nice to see that the Cardinals have banned alcohol from the clubhouse, as there’s nothing like saying, “we come to play” when you’re all liquored up. Perhaps that explains the Cardinals 5-10 record at home, which would be worse if the Astros could hit a ball or two when it counted. Nonetheless, this doesn’t have much to do with tonight’s game other then the fact that the Cardinals are a team in distress and yesterday’s pathetic 3-1 win over the Astros proves nothing. Anthony Reyes has started five games and he’s 0-5 with an ERA of 5.46. The Cardinals are not hitting the ball and that combo of bad pitching and no hitting is a bad recipe. Jeff Francis is off to a horrible start but we all know he can pitch and that 29 other managers that aren’t drunk would love to have him. The Cards have yet to beat a left-handed starter at Busch this season and we don’t see that changing here. Play: Colorado +1.14 (Risking 2 units).

MILWAUKEE –1½ +1.01 over Washington PINNACLE

The Brewers are 21-10 and own the major’s best record. The Nationals are 9-22 and own the leagues worst record. The Brewers are 13-5 at home and have won seven of eight while the Nats are 5-12 on the road and have lost five in a row. Chris Capuano has started six games for the Brewers and in those games the Brewers are 6-0. Matt Chico has started three games on the road for the Nats and in those three games he’s 0-3 with an ERA of 7.62 after walking 14 batters in 13 innings and surrendering 16 hits. That’s 30 base-runners in 13 innings or if you prefer and average of three runners per inning. The Brewers will be playing to another crowd of over 40,000 and one must wonder of this one can go any other way but another easy win for the upstart Brew Crew. Play: Milwaukee –1½ +1.01 (Risking 2 units).

GOLD KEY GAMES:
3 Units (Bonus Play): Arizona D-Backs -105
2 Units (Bonus Play): Chicago Bulls +5.5
Silver Key (Bonus Play): Baltimore Orioles +1.5 runs -145
Gold Key (Paid Play): Utah Jazz -4
The Jazz finished off the Rockets on the Road, and now return to friendlier confines under Head Coach Jerry Sloan to start the second round. They are playing good ball right now, and are on a 5-0 Straight Up and Against The Spread run at Home. The Jazz are 19-2 SU at Home lately in this match up. Other positive trends include 11-5 ATS off a SU win as Dogs, and 22-17 ATS versus winning teams.
The Warriors under their Head Coach Don Nelson shocked the world with a knockout of the Mavericks in six games. Now they try to continue their Cinderella run with a win here tonight in round two. The Warriors have covered seven out of their last eight events ATS, and must be respected. They show almost all positive trends for this one with the exception of 4-10 ATS as Road Dogs in this point range.
The line overnited at Jazz -4. We'll go with the Home Jazz to cover for us here tonight in a Gold Key Play.

Larry Ness' 15* NL Total of the Week (24-6 w/15* GOW plays TY!)

My 15* is on NYM/SF Over at 10:15 ET. Bonds sat out last night but returns tonight and that's always good news if you want runs and that's what I'm counting on tonight. At first glance one could ask why? Oliver Perez is off to an excellent start for the Mets with a 3-2 mark and 3.41 ERA in five starts, while Zito, after two poor starts, has an ERA of 1.65 over his last four starts. Now let's look closer. Perez went 10-18 with a 6.22 ERA over his previous two seasons with New York and Pittsburgh. In 12 road starts last year, his teams were 3-9 as he posted a 9.29 ERA. As for Zito, his last two starts were good but not great (14 IP / 10 hits / 5 ERs / 3.21 ERA) plus my guess is the Mets are looking forward to facing the pitcher they so-coveted in the off season. However, the biggest reason to play the over here, is both teams' success vs lefties this year! The Mets are 6-2 vs lefties averaging 7.1 RPG, while the Giants are 7-4 vs lefties, averaging 5.3 RPG. NL Total of the Week 15* NYM/SF Over.

This is Dave Cokin.
My free pick of the day is the game between (911) PHI Phillies and (912) ARI D'backs. Take "(912) ARI D'backs". Dave was an easy winner with his AFL Game of the Year Sunday as LA rolled past Las Vegas. There's more Arena action on tap tonight, and Dave's call on the Monday night contest is FREE at 1-888-389-7223!... "Doug Davis has pitched in some tough luck so far for the Diamondbacks, but the big lefty is actually in excellent form right now. Freddy Garcia may or may not go in this game for the Phillies. Garcia did something to his knee in a bizarre collision with a golf cart prior to the Sunday night game. Whether or not Garcia goes doesn't matter to me, and I'm looking for 'Zona to get this series off to a good start with the win here

THE WUNDERDOG
The Dodgers swept the Marlins here last year and will have their ace on the mound tonight. Brad Penny has been brilliant so far standing at 3-0, 1.64 ERA, and has not allowed a HR in 38.1 innings. The Marlins have struck out 40 times in the last four games, a sign the team may be heading into a slump. Ricky Nolasco pitched a good game off the DL, but it is the second game that is usually the toughest after a stint on the DL. We like the Dodgers to continue their Florida success and get the series opening win tonight.

Philadelphia Phillies (14-17) at Arizona Diamondbacks (17-16)
(R) Freddy Garcia (1-2) vs. (L) Doug Davis (2-3)

Philadelphia sends right-hander Freddy Garcia (1-2, 6.05) to the mound. Garcia allowed four earned runs, seven hits and two walks in five-plus innings against Atlanta on Wednesday, a 4-3 loss. He faced the Diamondbacks once in his career, no record with a 1.29 ERA. Arizona counters with Doug Davis (2-3, 2.25 ERA). The left-hander allowed one unearned, five hits and striking out seven over seven innings in a 2-1 defeat to the Dodgers last Wednesday. Davis is 1-1 with a 3.46 ERA in four career starts against the Phillies

The Diamondbacks are just 1-5 in their last 6 games and have lost five of the last six meetings against the Phillies, but have won six of its last 9 games at home. Take Arizona with Doug Davis on the hill. The southpaw has pitched sound and is the seventh-best in the National League with a 2.25 ERA

Oddsmakers:
Opening line has Arizona as a -105 home favorite with the total listed at 9 'over'.

Houston's right-hander Roy Oswalt (4-2, 3.06 ERA) allowed one run over eight innings in a 3-1 win against the Red last Wednesday. Oswalt is 18-1 with a 2.46 ERA lifetime against Cincinnati in 21 starts.

Cincinnati 's right-hander Kyle Lohse (1-2, 3.12 ERA) allowed three runs and eight hits in six innings last Wednesday against Houston and Roy Oswalt in a 3-1 loss. Lohse is 1-3 with a 4.05 ERA in four career outings, including three starts against Houston.

Houston has played poorly away from home, just one win in their last 9 road games, but has beaten the Reds in five of the last six meetings and four of the last six at Cincinnati.
