I think anyone who chooses to dabble in consensual adult "crimes" (illicit drug use, gambling et al) can benefit from doing at least a couple weeks at the county level.
heh
Nah, really.
I've lost almost 11 months of my earlier life doing county time on various misdemeanor charges (bad checks of low $$ amounts, failure to pay traffic fines etc) and will share the following.
1) Jail is very Below Average place to spend time.
2) Jail at the county level for short period is not that big a deal.
THE REASON I emphasize the second point is that if you are possibly ever arrested for low level drug possession, gambling, soliciting a prosty etc, the most important thing to do is Keep Your Mouth Shut until you can get bailed out.
Most such charges won't go far as long as you don't confess to the arresting officer or take a foolish plea deal all in hopes of avoiding a short bit of county time.
The biggest fear about being arrested and jailed is, "When Will I Get Out??"
If you're scared and feel like you can't do a few days while your friends/family arrange bail - you might might foolishly give up info to the arresting officer or assistant DA.
A conviction will last a lifetime.
So don't make it easy for them to convict you.
You have the right to remain silent. Use it.
Once you're out on bail, most minor drug possession cases or other misdemeanor charges can be negotiated into some kind of Deferred Adjudication (where you stay straight for 6-12 months and the case is then dismissed), Community Service etc.
One of my most important job roles is teaching people how to employ their First and Fourth Amendment rights. ANyone at the Rx is welcome to email me at our non-profit educational org.
