First real losing day in over a week. Bound to happen, and moving on to today. Won 6 of the past 8 days, trying to get back on the ball and make it 7 of 9. My first 5* of the season goes today. Best of luck to all.

5* Los Angeles Dodgers -135

I had this line in the -160 to -170 range.

Derek Lowe vs. Sergio Mitre. Mitre has been a notoriously bad day game pitcher. 1-7 in 11 starts, opponents bat .306 vs. him in the sun. He is still recovering from a blister on his pitching hand. He hasnt faced these Dodgers hitters much, and the Marlins are 0-7 in Mitre's last 7 starts. Marlins are 0-4 in games that he appears in this season. The Marlins used a few key guys out of the bullpen last night, including Taylor Tankersley who has been very consistent for Florida out the pen.

Derek Lowe hasn't been as sharp during day games, but he has dominated this Marlins lineup. Due in part because Lowe's nasty sinkerball has this young, aggressive Marlins lineup swinging for the fences, and always on top of the ball. This Marlin team goes as Miguel goes, and he is 0-13 lifetime vs. Lowe. Recently he has clinched two series, and he'll go for it again here today. Lowe is 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA and .184 opponent batting average in his last two starts against the Marlins. He should be able to do that today as they are not playing well right now. Dodgers have taken 7 of their last 9 vs. the Marlins. They were shut down by Peavy, Penny and *gulp* no hit through 6 by Tomko last night. Take a step back and you can see that the Marlins are in the midst of a funk right now offensively, which is how they win baseball games. 4-6 last 10 games, batting .230 the last 7 days, and they needed a 2 run homerun from from the most unlikely of sources last night to generate runs. Marlins have Cody Ross and Jeremy Hermida, spot starters and key bench players on the DL, and that has hurt them in key situations bringing in a reliable bat to pinch hit for the pitcher off the bench.

With Mitre allowing lefties to hit .349 off him the past 3 years, Furcal (SH) and Juan Pierre (LH) should be able to set the table today and wreck havoc on the bases. You can overpower these little guys, but Mitre doesnt throw hard enough, nor is he crafty enough to get these two scrappy hitters out. These guys will set the table and the bigger bats will be driving them in. Saiko looked stellar last night in the closing role, and overall I see the Dodgers leaving town with the series win here today.

Lowe looked fantastic in his last start. Furcal and Kent out of the lineup though.

It doesn't matter.

Marlins are starting Matt Treanor instead of Miguel Olivo, who has been providing a lot of hits for FLA lately. They still have Amezaga in CF, Boone at 1B, and Borchard in RF. The bottom 4-5 hitters for Florida is very weak and if they don't score runs in the top 4 guys in their lineup, the key piece of that 4 being Miguel Cabrera who is 0-13 vs. Lowe, they aren't scoring much.

Plus Nomar is back in the lineup after being benched from his slump. Think he has something to prove today and he has good career numbers vs. Mitre.

2* Atlanta Braves -1.5 +105

Obvious pitching mismtach here. You want to play Wells during home, night games, and fade him on road, daytime games. That's what we have here. Atlanta is the #1 daytime team in baseball slugging almost .500 in the sunlight, and they are crushing lefties as well. Wells is allowing .400 BA against on road games, and day games. Padres should have trouble today vs. Hudson as he is pitching well right now. Good spot for the Braves to get back on track offensively.

BOL Box. Glad to see I'm on the same side as your big play. Love it as well. Against you with the ML on San Diego though. Wells sucks on the road, but is money in Atlanta. Atlanta's bats aren't hitting like they were a couple weeks ago and are hitting only .230 over the last 7 days. That's a good sign for a crafty pitcher like Wells. San Diego has played great in May for 2 years straight now and while in itself it doesn't mean much, the players seem to have gotten a bit of a confidence boost with that knowledge. See it as a potential pitching duel, which is why I went with the overpriced dog. Just my $.02 though. BOL today.

No Kent or Furcal for LA....does it matter?

:ohno: Mitre has a lot of trouble with lefties, so I figured we'd see Furcal in there batting lefty today. Certainly can't help the Dodgers cause, but IMO doesn't kill their value by any means.

It certainly doesn't help. But I feel so strongly about this play, it doesn't hurt either. This is all about pitching today.

I just feel really confident about Derek Lowe vs. the Marlins with the lineup Florida is putting out there, it is no surprise they arent hitting well right now.

Dodgers are up 2-1, with game 4 here today, and a chance to leave Florida with 3 out of 4 games and one of their frontline guys on the mound vs. Sergio Mitre.

If you are LA, you dont let this game go. Today is one of those days where I think they find a way to win, and thats not far fetched with the Marlins using Tankersley yesterday out of the pen.

Another thing I like is that they have been facing power pitchers lately, between Penny throwing mid 90's, Tomko throwing mid 90's, and Peavy throwing low to mid 90's, the Marlins bat speed should be sped up pretty good right now. Now you bring in Lowe with his sinker, and you gotta have patience to make him bring that ball up in the zone. Out of the hand it should look fat to Florida before it falls off the table and they overswing. Just dont think they will get to Lowe today.

Thats why I dont put much stock in this day night stats.

The Braves were the worst team in baseball in day games last season for most of the year. Now they are the best.

So does Scott Thorman and Kelly Johnson make that much difference?

LOL:thumbsup:

You can say that for any stat. It was X last year and Y this year. What a difference a year makes. It's all about the moment. Braves were the worst team in baseball 1st half, and were awesome 2nd half. Same with Oakland. Baseball is a streaky sport. Right now, Braves are the best day team in baseball, they are playing a day game, and it's just one of a few reasons why I like your boys today.

tell me about it. they are making a below average MLB pitcher look like all-world. More importantly, they need to get into the Marlins bullpen

Lowe is doing what i expected. But he got drilled in the leg last inning, and hasn't been getting the same sink since. Ball is hanging up there a bit more, and I'm not sure he can make it through the top of the lineup again. This is gonna get hairy

I was thinking the same thing. He gave up back to back singles before getting bailed out by that great double play.
