91-78, +35.96
2-6, -6.60
First real losing day in over a week. Bound to happen, and moving on to today. Won 6 of the past 8 days, trying to get back on the ball and make it 7 of 9. My first 5* of the season goes today. Best of luck to all.
5* Los Angeles Dodgers -135
I had this line in the -160 to -170 range.
Derek Lowe vs. Sergio Mitre. Mitre has been a notoriously bad day game pitcher. 1-7 in 11 starts, opponents bat .306 vs. him in the sun. He is still recovering from a blister on his pitching hand. He hasnt faced these Dodgers hitters much, and the Marlins are 0-7 in Mitre's last 7 starts. Marlins are 0-4 in games that he appears in this season. The Marlins used a few key guys out of the bullpen last night, including Taylor Tankersley who has been very consistent for Florida out the pen.
Derek Lowe hasn't been as sharp during day games, but he has dominated this Marlins lineup. Due in part because Lowe's nasty sinkerball has this young, aggressive Marlins lineup swinging for the fences, and always on top of the ball. This Marlin team goes as Miguel goes, and he is 0-13 lifetime vs. Lowe. Recently he has clinched two series, and he'll go for it again here today. Lowe is 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA and .184 opponent batting average in his last two starts against the Marlins. He should be able to do that today as they are not playing well right now. Dodgers have taken 7 of their last 9 vs. the Marlins. They were shut down by Peavy, Penny and *gulp* no hit through 6 by Tomko last night. Take a step back and you can see that the Marlins are in the midst of a funk right now offensively, which is how they win baseball games. 4-6 last 10 games, batting .230 the last 7 days, and they needed a 2 run homerun from from the most unlikely of sources last night to generate runs. Marlins have Cody Ross and Jeremy Hermida, spot starters and key bench players on the DL, and that has hurt them in key situations bringing in a reliable bat to pinch hit for the pitcher off the bench.
With Mitre allowing lefties to hit .349 off him the past 3 years, Furcal (SH) and Juan Pierre (LH) should be able to set the table today and wreck havoc on the bases. You can overpower these little guys, but Mitre doesnt throw hard enough, nor is he crafty enough to get these two scrappy hitters out. These guys will set the table and the bigger bats will be driving them in. Saiko looked stellar last night in the closing role, and overall I see the Dodgers leaving town with the series win here today.
