Trainer Norman faces manslaughter charge

Trainer Cole Norman has been charged with manslaughter for his role in an automobile accident near Hot Springs, Arkansas, that killed an 86-year-old woman.

The accident on February 5 occurred when Norman crossed the center line in his Cadillac Escalade and struck Virginia Heath’s Ford Explorer.

Heath, the cousin of former President Bill Clinton, died from her injuries.
If convicted of the Class C felony, Norman could be sentenced to three to ten years in prison and/or pay a $15,000 fine.

According to toxicology reports, Norman tested positive for opiates, the tranquilizer benzodiazepines, and the painkillers hydrocodone and oxycodone. Norman was not injured in the accident.

According to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, Norman told Arkansas State Police Corporal Jorge Osejuera that he was tired and may have fallen asleep.

Norman broke his neck in an ATV accident in December 2005 and was uninjured in a car accident in May 2006. He is serving a six-month suspension that he incurred when two of his horses exceeded the permitted level for total dissolved carbon dioxide in the Jean Laffitte Stakes on November 3 at Delta Downs.

Norman’s horses have been running in the name of his assistant, Jorge Lara, since February 15.

Norman has won six training titles at Oaklawn Park and nine at Louisiana Downs.
