any advice to stop the annoying noise ?

Electrical interference-have to shield them or move them further away.

Check your connections, one may be loose. Next, check your wires - may have a bad wire.

Why would it suddenly start, when nothing has been moved ?

If that's the case, follow FW's advice. If it just started, it sounds like something is loose.

Doug, if the two things I suggested didn't solve it, you may have an input jack that cracked from the wire being loose. Best to check your wires with the TV and stereo off. You can blow some of your stereo or amp with the popping or static sounds.

just for the record,has something been sitting on wires? friend of mine had his t.v. sitting on wires and over time wires weakened and shorted out and caused a major fire.

EVERYBODY ALWAYS CHECK AND MAKE SURE ELECTRIC APPLIANCES ARE NOT SITTING ON TOP OF THE WIRES.PSA

Wires short out a lot where the bend is at the input/output jacks.
