Carruthers NEWS

David Carruthers, ex-chief executive of BetonSports, has sent a letter asking for individuals at the company’s former advisers to lobby the UK government, the EU and UK and European Members of Parliament on his behalf as part of his attempts to use the recent WTO decision as part of his defence.

In the letter, Carruthers asks the recipients – including it is believed individuals at BetonSports’ brokers Evolution and auditors Baker Tilly – to write to Charlie McCreevy, European commissioner for internal market services at the European Commission, and Peter Mandelson, European commissioner for external trade, as well as UK and European Members of Parliament.

The news of the letter emerged a matter of days after the US authorities in Utah unveiled further indictments against US-facing online gambling interests, including those behind payment processing companies Gateway Technologies and CurrenC. It also comes in the same week as BetonSports plc is due to announce its formal insolvency arrangement.

The Carruthers letter was sent early in May, subsequent to a decision by judge Mary Ann Medler in St Louis, Missouri, to allow Carruthers’ lawyers to seek outside opinion regarding the recent finding by the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in favour of Antigua and Barbuda’s complaint against the US in regard to online gambling.

Carruthers accuses the US government of actions which have “destroyed businesses, free competition and lives”. The letter adds that “now more than ever it is important to get heard” and that it is “critical to communicate and ensure that (the) impact and importance of this WTO decision are not lost to silence and inaction”.

Carruthers says the WTO decision has “extraordinary implications for my life” and adds that the issue “goes beyond my personal circumstances”.

The letter goes on: “The US decision to arrest me not only shut down BetonSports, but the actions by the US government have destroyed nearly all the public online gaming companies in the UK. Based on what the WTO has now called a treaty violation, more than US$10bn in equity of UK-listed companies were wiped away.

Three UK listed gaming companies have closed completely and other UK citizens have been arrested as well, victims of a policy that the WTO has now determined as unfair and violates their treaties.”

Carruthers was arrested last July on charges of racketeering and wire fraud by the US authorities and is currently on bail in a St Louis hotel awaiting trial. In his letter, he says he has been “under house arrest for over eight months”.

Wonder what the US would do if this was a ruling against them just like this?

Related: Carruther pleaded not guilty charges of racketeering yesterday.

When the US legalises gambling in five years - after sufficiently wiping clean all competition for betharrahs.com - will Carruthers still be held in prison? Can you be held for the entirety of your term if the crime you are charged with ceases to be a crime in the middle of your sentence?

My question is--Does a Judge have to "approve a letter to be written" in such a case as this or am I living in "Hitler's Germany!"

Simply the judge states she'll allow Carruthers lawyers to present outside opinions as evidence for the defendent. Carruthers doesn't need her permission to write letters. All the Judge is saying is she'll allow these opinions or responses to be presented to her.

Yes Xpanda Harrahs has given money to Frist and others and is the only reason this hornets nest has risen up.

Then the GOP blows smoke up thier constituates asses claiming this is all done in the name of morality and human desency when it's all about the money being shoveled thier way.

All this being said why are we having the bash at a Harrahs properties?

That is if the Flamingo is still the front runner.

Hell Harrahs has probably already given thre DOJ a heads up your coming.

The USA has been the Greatest Nation on earth for a couple of simple reasons. Being able to write a letter has left me befuddled. What gives ANY judge the right to say if the ;lawyer can or can-not present the response from such lettter-- I'm baffled beyond words to explain. If, there was some "independand" resourse to say irrevelant in a case on INTERNATIONATIONAL MATTERS; no problem at all . But --this is a little far stated.

If we are talking a jury case--all odds ARE ON THE TABLE; I think the whole US Justice system has gone WAY far AFOWL! That's why I think if you are an independant thinking citizen--you vote AGAINST ALL attorney's running for ANY office!

I think it is gonna be awful hard for the US government to get convictions in ALL these cases. The more they arrest, the more chances for case law to make people not guilty.

Most people in the US no longer see gambling as a crime.

If some of these guys fight (Kaplan has no choice) it could get interesting.

Fight?

These guys run and do the opposite. But that is the type of person who causes these problems to begin with. You can't win anything by running.

Calvin is smart enough to stay out of the states and Dominican republic. It is hard to believe other than Carruthers (The 1st) that the rest of these guys did not have this simple intelligence.
