The rule is like that so a pitcher thats rocked for say 7 runs and yanked in the 3rd isnt rewarded with a win if his team is leading 10-7 unless he lasts 5 innings...i think its a good rule...

Whoever is 1st releif gets automatic win. Guy can be up 9-1 get shelled for 6 runs in 1 inning and get the win., thats why stupid rule.

All due respect, but Sean White pitched better than anyone tonight and deserved a win in my opinion. 4 1/3 perfect with a strikeout, I don't feel too bad rewarding him this time.

It actually prevents a pitcher from winning 60 games a season. This way they must rest for 3/4 days after a start, i think that's fair.

I agree with you there it's not fair that a guy can come in a record 1 out and get the win, but what other option is there...maybe just give them a team pitching win?...its an idea...

RULE IS OUTDATED more pitchers on pitch counts etc. no need to risk an injury so a pitcher can get a win. THE PLAYERS UNJION NEEDS TO GET INVOLVED HERE. Too much money at stake nowadays. Make it up to the official scorer if it is not already.

i dont think its asking too much for these guys to play 5 innings in order to get credit for the win.

why does someone have to " get the win" its not like we are adding up wins to see if they match the teams win total

I actually think there is scorer's discretion to give the win to the most deserving reliever. It's come up in the past.

Yup, here we go:

There are occasions when the official scorer has some discretion in awarding the win to a pitcher other than the starter, when the starter does not last 4 innings. According to Rule 10.17, the pitcher at the time the team takes the lead shall be awarded the win...unless that pitcher is a starter who didn't last 5 innings. In this event, "the official scorer shall credit as the winning pitcher...the relief pitcher who, in the official scorer’s judgment was the most effective, if there is more than one relief pitcher."

it's not Little Leagues, they play 9 innings and how do you not know this rule by now?

I was wondering the same thing, anyone who really gambles on baseball should know the rules IMO

OLSEN left in the 5th the other night:

Florida built a 5-0 lead by the third inning, capped by Boone's two-run shot, and took no chances when starter Scott Olsen struggled with his control.
Olsen was yanked in the fifth after giving up a two-run single to Jeff Francoeur, having walked five in 4 1-3 innings. He left with a 5-2 lead, but didn't pitch long enough to qualify for the win. "You owe it to the other 24 guys," Gonzalez said. "You would love to have given him the opportunity, but it was one of those gut feelings, you know?"
Justin Miller got out of further trouble in the fifth and Kevin Gregg escaped a bases-loaded jam in the eighth.

Olsen was tightlipped about being yanked just two outs short of qualifying for a win.
"Not my call," he kept repeating over and over, though he did concede, "My control was bad on every ball I threw, for the most part."
Gonzalez wasn't concerned about shaking Olsen's confidence. "We'll keep building on it," the manager said. "Here's a 23-year old kid that we need to get better. We will and he will."

You usually only get yanked for 3 reasons, by the umpire, injury or shitty performance. Olsen didn't have the stuff, walked five guys, struggled with control, A Jones on deck, 93 pitches. That's fair enough.
