A PUNTER scooped £178,000 for a £10 soccer bet — which only came good with a last-minute penalty.

The man had been on the verge of tearing up his betting slip as Charlton led Liverpool 2-1 after 89 minutes.

But in the 90th minute Liverpool were awarded a penalty which Harry Kewell slotted home. The goal was worth £178,000 to the punter — who would have won NOTHING from the accumulator bet if Kewell missed.

The gambler, from Sawston, Cambs, had correctly predicted eight results
for the last day of the Premiership on Sunday — including Manchester United’s shock home defeat to West Ham.
The accumulator came in at odds of 17,841-1.

The punter, who asked not to be named, said: “I had looked at the betting coupon and had a gut feeling about the matches. My first reaction was that there was no way all eight would come in.
“But like a true punter, I couldn’t change my mind, so I had a tenner on it.”

A Corals’ spokesman said it was one of the firm’s biggest payouts. “It’s cost us a fortune — but we have to congratulate him.”
