Note- he promised the ump Tom Haller he would be in the HOF some day....this was just a typical Earl Weaver ejection, you don't see managers like this today....

Note the time , the game had just started and Weaver was tossed and then the entire argument was mostly about everything but the questionable call.

In later years home plate ump Ken Kaiser was removed from calling any Orioles game because of the obvious grudge he had towards Weaver and Murray.

Classic Weaver. That intensity is part of the reason he was a great manager along with Billy Martin. What shows they put on. Love it.

Ken Kaiser was there at the end. He was the worst empire i have ever seen and his ego and temper made him out of line. In one playoff game Sox/A's he was the 2nd base empire and called a balk on the Sox pitcher. the replay showed NOTHING. This guy called a balk in the middle of a playoff series and it was a clear no call. He just loved trouble and being on TV. Unreal.

So true about Kaiser 'roll'...he also had some serious issues with Eddie Murray, eventually was taken off all Orioles games....he was as arrogant as they come and a lousy ump.

I never knew that but he also had major problems with Billy martin (they threatened each other several times) and the Red Sox too. WHy the league never did anything like that is beyond me. Joe Morgan (former Sox manager not the ex Cinci player) had problems with Kaiser and said the same thing that the league should do something. Arrogant is the right word and he looked like he wanted to fight you. Ridiculous.

That is so true he really did look confrontational and ready to fight at all times, with that scowl on his fat mug.

He was voted the worst umpire in the AL in a poll of players during 1999 spring training. Later that year, he was among the umpires who submitted their resignations in a failed gambit by the Major League Umpires Association, and he was not among those later re-hired following union negotiations....

Tom Candiotti recalled that Kaiser "wouldn't move three steps to call a play."
Candiotti's assessment of Kaiser was seconded by one of his American League colleagues, Durwood Merrill, who noted that Kaiser usually "marched to the beat of his own drummer"

All true. HE is one of those guys where you just watch him for a period of time and you can see it all by his actions. I think he was a former wrestler or fighter of some sort and he definitely looked like he wanted to fight. Not right at all. Good observations above about a terrible empire and a disgrace to the game.

The game 3 in Philly was a close game, I was at the first 3 games of the series....and very true those first 3 games were close...

In fact I credit John Lowenstein for getting the O's going in that series, they didn't start hitting til midway into game 2 and were trailing and the crowd was dead until "Brother Low" homered, a towering shot to center and from that point the Orioles took off.....Game 3 was tight as well, they scratched and clawed and finally got to Carlton, but it was tight one.

The 1979 season which was IMO the very best of all the great Orioles seasons, what can you say the O's led 3-1 in games, had 3 great pitchers lined up and then lost 3 straight! I was at game 6-7 and it was terrible....that year (1979) was truly magical even though they came up a game short, if you were around the area at the time you would just know what I meant.....from 1979-1983 the Orioles were the team in baseball, period.....same with from 1966 to 1971 - two glorious time periods that will never be again.

The AL East back then was just incredible, all those teams could play, nothing like today, baseball has really dropped off as far as competetiveness and overall competition, it just isn't even close.

As far as Earl goes, he was an attraction in himself...you went to the game hoping he might pop out of the dugout and go nuts, then the fans would go crazy and many times the team would ignite off of his antics....he was truly one of a kind, a gem of manager.

great great memories :toast:

Kim- Boddicker was off the charts that post season, first vs Chicago then vs Philly...he had what the dubbed the 'Foshball' lol ...he was just nasty with that slop, had great control and kept everyone off blance, he was a hiuge reason for the Orioles success in '83 especially.
